A Great Television

Pros Great Picture!
Cons Inputs too low, top is not flat
Recommended it? Yes
The Bottom Line:  A good picture for a good price, with many hookups available.
A few months ago, my wife said she wanted an armoire for our old TV (we have an infant who was starting to pull himself up on furniture, and my wife was afraid he'd pull the TV on top of him).

I convinced my wife to get this television instead, and we're both very glad. First, this TV sits on the floor, and it's on casters, so it's easy to reposition, and there's no way our little on can pull it down. Our family room has floor to ceiling windows or sliding glass doors on three sides, and there was no wall space for a plasma or LCD screen, so we decided to go with this tv, which we ordered from Overstock.com.

The picture quality is phenomenal, much better than our old TV. Of course, there are still only about 15 channels in HD: the movie channels have HD versions, and so do the major networks, but only prime time shows and sports are typically in HD. Then there's a handful of other channels in HD: ESPN, Discovery, etc. But even non-HD shows look good.

The sound is adequate, but it's not phenomenal. But I'm not going to start stringing speakers all over the room for the surround sound effect.

There are a ton of inputs on this TV, and there's even a memory card reader on the front, so you can take photos with your digital camera and then have them cycle on the screen (however, movies won't show up until you convert them and burn them on a DVD).

There are two minor annoyances I have with the TV. First, the input jacks are all at the bottom of the TV, and my DVD cord, for instance, would not reach from the top of the TV to the input jack, so you can't put your devices on top of the TV. Well, we just managed to get our cable box.

The other minor annoyance I have is that the top of the device is not flat, but rather is contoured with the TV tube. This means that it is nearly impossible to put much of anything on top of the TV: we managed only to get the cable box up there. It'd be nice if the top were flat so we could put the DVD and VCR up there, and also magazines, and whatever stuff we want to keep out of reach from our infant.

The remote isn't entirely intuitive, switching input devices should be better labeled. However, that's all I use the remote for, as my cable box remote can control volume, muting, and on/off for the TV.

There are some features this TV has that we don't use: it has the capability to get some sort of TV Guide list, but our cable box provides that anyway. Our cable box also does picture-in-picture. We have the DVR, so we couldn't just get one of those cards and bypass cable box entirely.

All in all, I would recommend this TV. We got it at Overstock.com for about $1,200 with shipping, and it's been great. I think the TV screen is quite good, and unless you really need the space that plasma or lcd would provide (for instance, you live in a small apartment), I'd stronly urge looking at this TV, as it's considerably cheaper but the picture still looks great.
