I was looking around to replace my 29" tube television set and came across this television at a bargain price. I had not considered a projection television because I had heard of problems with being able to see the picture from odd angles, and a lack of brightness. However, I was considering a DVD purchase, and wanted a TV with lots of hookup options. This TV was a great deal with DVD color-separation hookups, 2 video game hookups for my Playstation and Nintendo, and 2 S-VHS inputs for my video camera. It also had two-tuner PIP, which I craved. The price was also $600 less than I had seen it anywhere else, so we jumped at it.
This television has been our family's main set for over a year now, and I have to say that all the bad things you could say about a projection set seem to have been compensated for. I have a wrap-around couch and I can clearly see the picture from anywhere on it. The image is clear enough to see from the next room. I normally sit at my desk at the other end of my townhouse (40' away) and watch TV when sitting at my computer desk. The picture is clear even this far back! After a year, I would have expected to have to have the picture re-converged, but we have had no focus problems from day one.
I love all the features on this set! The sound system is fantastic, and has many settings, with its own built-in subwoofer in addition to the two speakers. It'll even do surround-sound delays with the built-in speakers. The picture is fantastic, and I'm impressed with my ability to play video games in the multi-size selectable PIP windows.
Some features I don't use (due to my cable company) are channel scan and preview. But when they go digital, I'll be hooking up two antenna inputs to do these. There are other features I don't use often, such as the included multi-lingual closed-captioning. The lighted remote control is also very nice, and let me get rid of my cable and VCR remotes easily.
We've moved in the past few months, and the TV moved easily (on wheels). The movers were careful with the set, and it doesn't have one problem with the casing, from a durability aspect it came through fine.
Another great thing is that with a 55" screen, I can watch wide-format movies from my DVD player in 3 different aspect ratios, and they all look great on this screen. For HDTV, I think I'm going to go with a separate convertor, since this set will take the S-VHS inputs or the color-separated inputs. With 800 lines of resolution, and a picture this clear, I can't see spending too much extra money for a HDTV display.
The only missing feature I can determine is separated audio outputs for the main picture and the PIP window, but I haven't looked around to see if any other set offers that option.
If you've got a tight budget, but want that big screen set, this is definitely a good purchase for you.
