I've owned 4 HDTV's now. Toshiba is what I ended up with
Pros
Great way to get started in HDTV
Cons
Only can program 30 channel names.
Recommended it?
Yes
The Bottom Line:
This is Hands down the best HDTV for the money. You can spend more and have marginal better picture but, at $3000 it's hard to justify spending more
First you must know that this tv has been replaced with the 57H80. It's an upgraded version of the 56". It's an inch bigger and the "feature set" has been upgraded. I first bought the 56H60 last year (2000) right when they came out. I paid too much. About a month in to having it I notice a scratch in the center of the screen. The store was nice enough to replace it. HOWEVER, the 56" was discontinued and no 57" were in yet. I got the 61" big brother.... Oops. TOO BIG. (Be careful when choosing the size of your tv. I sit 13' from the front of the screen and 61" is too big) The 61" took up too much room and it was so big that you almost had motion sickness watching an action film.
The store again was nice enough to exchange it. With the 57" still not available I went with the Pioneer 53". (Which was about $800 more then the Toshiba). The picture on this is MUCH deeper. However two days later the picture died! For my room I liked the size of the 56" better then the 53". By then that the 57" was finally available so, I got that one.
The feature set has been improved and it's features are better then the Pioneer. For example both sets have the ability to preview a set of channels at once on one side of the screen. The Pioneer can only preview 3 channels at a time and they are the next 3 numbered channels (i.e. if your watching channel 7, you can preview 8, 9 and 10...) The Toshiba you can preview 9 channels and you can program two set of them to what you want. There are other things that are better. The Pioneer beats the Toshiba in two ways. 1) The picture is deeper. There are deeper reds and blues. 2) the cabinet seems to be built better. However, I couldn't justify the difference on almost $1000 dollars more.
One last thing. The service man showed me the hidden functions to get to more convergence then the standard 9 spots. It's well worth the effort to call your service center for this.
