An excellent quality tv at a great price.
Pros
Good picture, decent sound, asthetically pleasing
Cons
Blacks could appear darker
Recommended it?
Yes
The Bottom Line:
A great tv with above average quality, a real value compared to Hiatchi and Mitsubishi models that costs more money.
The Toshiba 57H83 projection TV is a great set that has a lot of the quality and functionality of more expensive brands such as Hitachi and Mitsubishi.
Out of the box
Out of the box, a modern and simple casing first impressed me. It is a nice gray color that works well with dark and light rooms. It is on casters so it can be easily wheeled from one room to the next.
Picture
When I turned the TV on I was quite impressed. The color is amazing, with deep rich reds and blues. The picture was bright, and clear. The only problem with the picture at all was that blacks could be darker, but it is still impressive. All colors were accurate and not oversaturated, and could be easily adjusted with the controls.
Sound
The sound is pretty standard for a projection TV, and is of similar power to small car speakers. It is clear, with decent highs and bass. This TV will of course shine with a surround sound system, but the built in speakers are certainly ok.
The extras and compatibility.
The remote is easy to use, with a one touch button to change aspect ratio (which allows you to adjust the picture size to fit wide or standard screen instantly) The TV has plenty of ports in the back, including standard video, svideo, audio out, and component video: all the ports of today and the future, except for the white digital port that you can find on some more expensive HDTV's and HDTV ready TV's. This means that you may need an adapter in the future to watch high definition TV. The TV is ready for progressive scan (high quality) DVD players, and reproduces great looking DVDs when using component cables.
HDTV vs. HDTV ready
this television is HDTV ready, which means, in the future HDTV can be viewed in full quality on this TV with an adaptor box. These boxes are currently 500 dollars and will continually drop in price. HDTV's have built in adaptors and will not require this box, but are normally above 3000 in price.
Overall
Overall, this TV has a great picture, decent sound, and is a great buy for about 2000 dollars. Toshiba has a great background (it get's very few returns), and is a brand name I trust as an electronics sales associate.
