Ups and downs.

Pros Size, colors, sound quality, multiple digital video input sources
Cons No digital audio input/output, no auto detection of DVD picture size, Flawed calibration
Recommended it? Yes
The Bottom Line:  If you're considering this TV, shop around first.
I bought this TV on a plan. I was awed by its size and the price. I'd wanted a big screen for a long time, and I was lookin at Philips when I saw this one.

I will say that it improves standard coax TV signal SIGNIFICANTLY. It's not just a plain improvement, some channels actually look like DVD quality (SpikeTV is a good example) with the right setting.

Speaking of DVD quality, a lot of DVDs look absolutely stellar on this TV. Final Destination 2 is a perfect example.

Two different component video inputs are nice, as well as two separate S-video inputs. This allows for a lot of improved quality sources, including digital cable boxes.

I do have some problems with the TV, though, and some are nitpicks. The first and foremost: This being an HDTV and all, I would expect there to be digital audio inputs/outputs. There isn't. No digital coax, no fiber optic. What a letdown. I understand there's only two speakers, but what about clarity?
Second had to do with the color coordination. The calibration has to be done way too often. I don't normally have a problem with that, but for the fact that the manual calibration doesn't stay set. I have to do the auto one, and it doesn't work that well. With a projection TV, it's vital that the colors align correctly or every part of the picture gets a color "aura" that's annoying.
Third is the bass. It sounds nice and all at first, but if it gets too loud, you can start to hear that they skimped on the quality of the speakers, as they can't handle signals too loud. Even my small 32" can handle high bass signals without distortion - a definite negative for a $2000 TV.
Fourth, and not least, is the screen size setting. It's not automatic, nor does the so called "automatic" setting work the way it's supposed to. Let me explain. See, certain DVDs are encoded to be widescreen, and depending on your TV, the picture should stretch until eventually there are no black bars showing. This TV doesn't do that. The "Normal" mode is supposed to automatically detect the size of the window and display it - it doesn't. It just shows you what the DVD would look like on a 40" TV (perfect square). Defeats the purpose of a WIDESCREEN tv, Toshiba. Shame on you. You have to manually tell the TV to stretch the image widescreen, and all that does is strech the 40" image, so the bars are still there. Tsk Tsk.
