Luxury for the Eyes

Pros Beautiful picture, easily programmed
Cons limited network capabilities
Recommended it? Yes
The Bottom Line:  Unless you feel the need for a LCD or plasma, this is a great addition, including furniture value, to any entertainment room.
The Toshiba 62HMX95 is a spectacular addition to any media room.

With strong competition from Plasma and LCD screens, the DLP projection boxes are increasingly affordable.

This Toshiba unit offers incredibly sharp pictures, with very vivid colors in all lighting situations.

The set-up is very simple, with well documented manuals. Whether setting up with a cable box, or otherwise, there was a seamless integration. Just as simple was set up of the on-line TV Guide, which is a useful tool.

For those with home networks, there is some limited capacity to access .jpeg and .mp3 files through a wired home network. Unfortunately, there is no USB port for wireless access, nor is there capability of accessing .avi or .mpeg video files. An interesting feature, although not one that I have used, is the ability to communicate via e-mail, with the tuner, in order to set up remote program taping.

For those not using an intermediate set top box, the built in HD tuner successfully located signals and programmed them into the system very easily.

Like most remotes these days, with an eye toward multiple devices, the Toshiba remote is a bit cumbersome, but it was easily programed to work with our cable box, DVD player, and sound system. A lighted pad would have been very helpful, particularly since many prefer to keep their media rooms dark.

The Toshiba unit offers many input options, including 2 HDMI inputs. Especially useful is the PC connection option.

Based on your room's seating configuration, viewing angle may be critical. The Toshiba lists a 178 degree viewing angle. I think this is a bit generous, but the viewing was acceptable, even at very acute angles. I did find, however, that a large deviation in vertical dimension of viewing was disconcerting.

Although much is made of the rainbow effect that some people may notice on DLP units, I have not had any comments from our many friends that have come over to watch sporting events or movies.

As a aside, we also purchased the custom cabinet. It was very easy to assemble and flows very nicely with the unit. It is not readily available at discount, however, but I believe is well worth the cost.
