I have an older TV with a set-top DTV tuner. I wanted to upgrade to a DVD recorder from my VCR. After reading reviews, I settled on the Toshiba DR570 with a built-in DTV tuner. (replaces DR560) There were some consistent negatives, mainly relating to the remote control, but the Toshiba fit the need and price.
It’s a solid machine. I may not like everything about it, but they were wrong about the remote control. There are just many, many features to learn. It has a strong digital tuner. The recordings are solid quality regardless of the speed used. It’s much easier using a rewritable disk.
In the month I’ve had the Toshiba, I’ve made a range of recordings, edited, deleted. Tried all combinations. Everything works as intended. The on-screen menus are mainly intuitive. And if not, fiddling gets you there. It has all the requirements and flexibility.
The remote isn’t the easiest. No last channel recall, sound control and no on-screen time readout. No ability to record one channel and watch another. But I overcame that. Researched on the web, rewired accordingly, and bought a simple A/B switch that allows me to watch one channel and record another.
