A Good Quality, Everyday-Use VCR

Imagine my surprise (an understatement to be sure) when on Valentine?s Day of 1999 my wife presented me with a brand-new Toshiba VCR! Talk about a great, great present. It was a model M674, the predecessor to the M675. There weren?t any substantial changes to the functionality, and the models look pretty much the same.

Just as a bit of explanation, my wife purchased this incredible gift for me because she knows I enjoy editing together videos, and having a second VCR to work with where I like to do my editing (instead of removing the one we have in the living room and then putting it back when I?m done) made indulging my hobby easier.

This VCR also serves as ?my? VCR, which I use on a day-to-day basis to record shows that my wife probably isn?t so interested in watching. And let me tell you, my wife has great taste in picking things out (with the possible exception of her husband, but that?s a different story).

The VCR is easy to use, and packed with the features an average user needs for typical use. This is the first VCR I?ve owned with VCR+ technology. For people with difficulty figuring out how to set a timer to record, this is a big bonus. I happen not to use it, but I found it fascinating to see how it works.

The remote is a good size, and easy to use, with many functions controlled by a ring of four buttons. Like any electronic product, it takes time to get used to where everything can be found in the menus and which buttons you need to press when, but on the whole, Toshiba designed a very user-friendly VCR with good, detailed instructions to guide you.

Picture quality on this model is quite good, always an important feature in a VCR!

A feature that I find especially helpful in my hobby of editing tapes is a double set of auxiliary inputs. The first time I used this new VCR to be my master editing deck, it was amazing how much simpler I found this little addition to be. I had my ?old? VCR as one playback deck, with our camcorder as a second playback deck. It was far less cumbersome to just have them both plugged in and ready to switch at the push of a button, as compared to switching cables back and forth or changing tapes in a single playback unit.

To this day, I often walk by the VCR, and smile thinking of how much I was surprised and thrilled with the gift. For an electronics ?geek? like myself, it was amazing. My wife certainly did a great job on that slection!!!!
