Stylish looks, easy to use

bystenz Jan 21, 2004
Pros Flat glass screen, clean lines, pleasing visual design, convenient
Cons no s-video, slight quirks that are likely only our TV, heavy
Recommended it? Yes
The Bottom Line:  This isn't the best TV out there. If you want to spend a lot more, there are better TVs but for the money, this is a very respectable unit.
When we moved to Bermuda, we had no TV having just sold ours in Boston prior to the move. I was ready to move up to a large flat screen television, but my fiancee wanted to get a TV that fit on a TV stand that she had just purchased at a yard sale. While I don't normally make my electronics decisions based on existing cheap furniture - the decision was going to be made by her on this one since she was paying.

I must say, even though I initially was displeased with the choice, the unit has been quite nice.

When we got the unit home, it was quite large and hard to get out of the box. I plugged it into the wall and immediately the DVD tray spat out and stayed out. Pressing the eject button (or any button for that matter) or pressing on the tray would not put it back in. If you really toyed with it, you could get it in - but it wouldn't play a DVD.
So back it went to the shop - they adjusted something regarding "alignment" and then we had it again.
The DVD now works and it goes in and out just fine.
But when you go to eject the VHS cassette, it will do so into a closed door - you have to manually hole the door open for the tape to come out. Perfect.
That and if you play a DVD that has other language options available on it - absolutely no matter what you do when the DVD menu first comes up, it will start the movie with English subtitles - THEN you have to go back into the DVD menu and change it to tell it that you really don't want subtitles and then it is fine for the rest of the movie.

All of that said - I don't think any of that at all has to do with Toshiba or the quality of their products, I suspect that the place we got it here sells junk and that is how they can stay competitive in the market here.
But it sure is amusing to use.

The visual look of it is great - clean lines and it has a nice metal look/feel to it (even though it is all glass and plastic).
The screen is totally flat and has a good picture. Not flat and thin - the TV is a normal tube type, but the front surface is totally flat.

The VCR is easy enough to program that my fiancee does it regularly with no problems at all... well, very few problems. The remote is a good size and has easy to use buttons (although there are so many that it sometimes can be hard to know exactly where any given functionality is hidden on the thing).

There is no S-video input on the thing, but there are RCA cable jacks in both the front for easy access, and in the back as well.

I liked it enough to buy my mother a 20" version for her place (she didn't want anything big - it must be a guy thing to want large TVs).

If you need s-video, then this TV is not for you. Also, if you are a component snob, this TV is not for you since you just get the VCR and DVD player that are built in (although they are quite decent and toshiba makes a good DVD player) - if those eventually break, you can plug in new ones via the RCA jacks.
