Great features, but some units have problems with blank discs

Pros Astonishing picture and sound. Records to hard drive immediately, no lag after button push.
Cons Some individual units don't accept media well. Manual, remote.
Recommended it? Yes
The Bottom Line:  I would recommend this unit, but if after tying to load media you get frequent errors send it back and demand an upgrade.
I just sent my unit in for repair because it will not consistently accept blank media. One minute it will accept brand XYZ and record to it fine, then you pull the next brand new, pristine disc of the same brand off of the spool and it gives the "disc may need cleaning or is damaged physcially error". You have to cycle the unit on and off, maybe play a normal DVD, cycle it on and off again, say a prayer, etc. etc. adn then it will accept the very same disc it previously rejected as dirty or damaged. It doesn't matter what brand. Sometimes it will accept a blank disc with a few scratches on it even. Other times a brand new shiny disc off the spool will take you 30 minutes of screwing around with the unit to get it to accept it. Apparently it is a firmware issue or a problem with the hardware on one or more of the production runs. There is a version 13 and version 14 of software and hardware. Mine was version 13, which may have been the problem. If it were not for this one huge problem I would be very happy with the unit. Sure it takes it a while to power up, but I forgive that since this technology is still relatively new. The manual is not very well written in a few areas, so you will have to use trial and error on some of the buttons on the remote before you can correlate them to what is described in the manual. The chapter editing is cool as is the playist editing once you get the hang of them. Good on screen feedback for most functions. Astonishing quality to recorded content, especially at high bit rates. However, even bitrates below 4 look way better than VHS.
