The Bottom Line:
I recommend this unit for first time buyers, yet the durability Jury is still out.
I've been shopping for a DVD Player/DVR and stumbled upon this unit being closed out at Best Buy in Phoenix and bought it on the spot for $432 after taxes. I'm glad I did and agree with other reviews with the pro's and con's. I use it as a Tivo, except I don't have to subscribe to Tivo and can't understand why anyone would now with all the available choices of DVR's on the market.
I burned a DVD-R and it works on my DVD player and my buddy's. It has impressive features for editing and burning, but then I've only used a VCR to record and if I can use it, then a monkey can.
I think it's odd you can't use the RF Out to watch the DVD player's output, but only using the Video Out jacks unless I am missing something.
I think there could be more Timer Recording slots but it has plenty for a starter unit and it is way easy to program.
No DVD+R recording. Not a deal breaker for me but more serious Video makers might reconsider.
Cumbersome remote at first but, hey, I'm a guy and will adapt. I don't like the flip-open door to access more buttons but thats life.
No keyboard input as another reviewer mentioned. Man, that has to be the next standard feature since there is a USB port.
