Pros HDMI hookup
Cons terrible remote, slow response to commands, terrible playback
Recommended it? No

I have never been so unhappy with an electronics product in my life! I bought this without much thought as I liked the up-conversion feature and it came recommended from a sales clerk who claimed he had one and loved it. It just never crossed my mind that a product could be so horrible. It just... Read full review »

My second upsampling DVD player for review. See also my reviews of the Samsung 841 (http://www.epinions.com/content_178440343172) and the Denon 2911 (http://www.epinions.com/content_178441522820).

As with the Samsung, this player produces a picture somewhat better than a standard... Read full review »

Pros Most Definitely the HD quality picture
Cons Remote Control response
Recommended it? Yes

Installed my new Toshiba SD5970 2 weeks ago. Although it came with an HDMI cable, I had to get a new one as my new Mitsubishi 73" TV didn't have HDMI, just DVI. Radio Shack had a cable for $130..so I got it, knowing I could get one much cheaper online, then return theirs. I found one online (HDMI... Read full review »

Pros HDMI (Comes with an HDMI cable), Good D/A
Cons * The remote is a design failure
Recommended it? No

Okay, this is my personal review of Toshiba SD-5970 DVD player. I purchased this for my home theater system which includes an LCD projector, Sony VLP-HS3, which also has an HDMI interface. I will just note my findings and will not attempt to cover all possible aspects of using this product, so if I... Read full review »

Pros most affordable way to noticeably improve DVD picture quality
Cons questionable build quality and related reliability concerns
Recommended it? Yes

If you're looking at this DVD player, the HDMI/upconverting capability is likely to be the most important thing you'd want to know about, i.e., is it worth upgrading your DVD player? If you're a videophile on a tight budget, the answer is a resounding yes.

The 1080i picture via HDMI... Read full review »

Pros Great Picture, Good dollar Value, HDMI with 1080i 720p
Cons Dated Design, Gets Hot, Lacks Traditional Toshiba solid feel. AWFUL remote design.
Recommended it? Yes

To start with, I had to return the first one I bought, that in itself, is nothing unusal these days. But the second is prone to overheating and freezing up. After on for extended periods.
Still it has an Excellent Picture. Cheapest of HDMI UPconvert players and comes with a HDMI cable. When... Read full review »

Tried this player right out of the box with my Panasonic 37 inch plasma EDTV and Sony 42 inch LCD HDTV. Both easily matched my cable and satellite HD picture when playing widescreen Master and Commander, Farscape Peacekeeper Wars and Star Wars giftbox via the included HDMI cable.

Not happy with this DVD player!

Pros Comes with HDMI cable.
Cons Picture distortion on 720p and 1080i settings. Poor remote functioning and design.
Recommended it? No

Initially, I was impressed with the picture quality. It did look very clear and sharp with the 720p and the 1080i settings. However, I realized that on those settings, the picture is distorted and stretched. When I tried to adjust it with my TV (Sony 55 in LCD grand wega KDF-55WF655), I am not... Read full review »

Pros good picture.
Cons terrible product that does not perform properly.
Recommended it? No

We bought one, were very unhappy with the response time on the controls. You press a button and nothing happens - very frustrating. We returned it, thinking it was defective, and had the same problems - and worse. Before too long it started locking up when trying to play a DVD, requiring a power... Read full review »

Pros When picture is working it's beautiful. Sound when not stuttering is great.
Cons Remote, speed, upconversion and lawsuit.
Recommended it? No

I usually buy Panasonic products. However, Toshiba was the first out with HDMI hookups. I don't like to wait so I jumped and bought the DVD player.

The response time between pressing a button and the DVD responding in frustratingly slow. Pressing open, nothing happens, press again and... Read full review »
