Toshiba SDP-1000 - Welcome Home Year 3000

Pros DVD picture quality, Durability, Sound
Cons Pricey, Battery Life
Recommended it? Yes
The Bottom Line:  Toshiba has outdone Sony...finally!
Toshiba has now opened a clear gateway to the future. The 90s included MP3 and functionable laptops; and the new millenium is bringing in high-quality portable entertainment. The Toshiba SDP-1000 is truley remarkable. Packed in its tiny frame are loads of features and genuine power. Well done Toshiba!

In Perspective
When compared to modern DVD players the SDP-1000 is fairly pricey. A decent DVD player might be only 200 bucks, but since when did they include a built in screen? Like all conviences in life one must except the cost. This price tag might not be for everyone, but no-one said it was; if money is no object - or you need to go on a spending spree - you've found the right toy.

The Screen and Picture Quality
It may seem unfortunate that the screen is so small (about half the size of the computer monitor you are looking at now), but this is a relatively minor issue. Most of the times I have used the unit was during travel. In this situation it has to entertain only one person. That it does well...not for family viewing across the living room. Definitley modest.

The Picture quality makes up for any disconcern the screen size may cause you; honestly; Toshiba must have put more effort into making these tiny screens than all their big screen tvs combined. Every time I watch a movie I am reminded of Sony's Plasma screens. The sharpnest compares to real life, and the contrast can easily be adjusted for the enviroment you are viewing in.

Sound Quality
Sound quality is actually quite surprising. While not earth shattering, and nothing compared to a home theatre system or simply good speakers, those little babies crank out a lot of crisp sound. To me nothing is worse than listening to a movie with the sound fuzzy, and this was the main reason I chose this model. Ear phone jacks are also available so that you don't have to disturb your grochy neibour. The biggest pitfall is the bass quality. As any speakers: The bigger the better, and they're not big.

Durability
Regrettably I know from first-hand experience that Toshiba did build these to last! It slid off my desk once onto the hardwood floor. Nasty sounding but no obvious damage. It should be able to last forever. Thankfully the screen has a hard coating on it which is fairly resistant to scratching and breaking. The biggest problem I would foresee is the working of the screen hinges.

The Battery
Toshiba was trying too hard for light and compact on this one. A small rectangular shaped battery clips onto the back of the unit; weighing in the same as the unit itself at only 1 1/2 pounds! Because of that it may seem a tad unbalanced, but easily managable. The battery lasts about 2 1/2 hours. Sufficient for most movies; assuming you're not interested in the bonus matierial.

In Conclusion...
Toshiba has done a great job in creating an extremely compact and lightweight portable DVD player. Good luck!
