About five months ago our VCR broke and we decided to upgrade to a DVD and Video combo. After spending some time researching price and reviews, I settled on this version for $110. We have been using it heavily for five months and are happy with the quality and performance.

Pros Sound, Display, easy to use remote
Cons Doesn't like to turn off
Recommended it? Yes

I bought this machine in June 2004 and for the most part have been very happy.
The VCR has very good playback, fast rewind, good picture and is pretty easy to record with. I have only recorded 2 movies with it so far on SLP and they have turned out good. The DVD player is what I use most... Read full review »

See bottom for update...

I recently purchased a Toshiba 46" HDTV (see my review) and needed a DVD player to go along with it. I eventually decided to go with a DVD/VCR Combo for space saving reasons because my TV has a small storage space for AV Components.

I started my search... Read full review »

Works well

Pros ease of installation & use, auto clock set, JPEG slideshow mode
Cons no universal remote, remote button layout
Recommended it? Yes

I bought this combo unit for a gift, and it's used to play rental videos.

Combo units are definitely the way to go for a number of situations:
- Televisions (older, mainly) that do not have separate audio/video inputs. With only an antenna connection, a regular DVD player will not... Read full review »

Felt Great To Drop This Unit in Our Dumpster

bysaturnfan Apr 18, 2005

Pros Small size - Less wiring than separate VCR & DVD
Cons Disgraceful remote - Hard to program - Died quickly
Recommended it? No

After suffering for 14 months with the hard to use remote and awful VCR programming, the playback head went bad on the VCR putting lines throughout the picture.

Tried cleaning tape and then opened unit to clean. Even though we never used rental tapes, the head had gone south.

Wouldn't recommend for DVD

byhike7 Sep 23, 2005
4 Helpfuls 5 Helpfuls Was this review helpful?
Pros It was free
Cons Constant freeze up with DVD
Recommended it? No

Received for free in a give away, now I know why. Constant freeze ups with DVD, even with new movies right out of the package. Always starts to happen after the 1st 1/2 hour or 45 minutes (just as you are getting into the movie). VCR not all that great either (picture wise in play back). Buying a... Read full review »

Unreliable DVD Playback

byrdallemolle May 18, 2005
2 Helpfuls 3 Helpfuls Was this review helpful?
Pros small footprint for 2 functions - decent remote - VCR is good
Cons reader freezes - movies on DVD are no fun to watch
Recommended it? No

This is the second Toshiba unit I've had, and it's a replacement for one that I returned under warranty because the DVD's motor would get so loud sometimes that it could be heard easily over the sound of the movie that was being played.

This one works fine as a VCR. During DVD playback,... Read full review »

Pros Beautiful picture DVD and VHS. Excellent sound. Easy to use.
Cons Minor complaint is remote

I purchased this machine at Best Buy for $99.99 in early January. I previously had a Toshiba 2-disc DVD player which was and still is a terrific machine even after several years of use, but I wanted a combo unit to go with my new Sony LCD TV. The picture quality of the SD-V392 is terrific. I am... Read full review »

toshiba sdv 3

Pros You must be kidding!
Cons Too complex for just recording
Recommended it? No

This is by far the worst product I have had the displeasure to use. In recording a dvd from a tape I was prompted to have a title before finalizing; which I do not need. The manual is not user friendly in that you can look up the specific item you want so appantly Toshiba thinks you should read the... Read full review »
