This Toshiba DVD and Video Combo Unit Delivers Solid Performance For A Low Price!

Pros Works well, inexpensive
Cons May not work well with older tvs
Recommended it? Yes
The Bottom Line:  A good, basic DVD/VCR combo that works well.
About five months ago our VCR broke and we decided to upgrade to a DVD and Video combo. After spending some time researching price and reviews, I settled on this version for $110. We have been using it heavily for five months and are happy with the quality and performance.

WHAT YOU GET

You get one unit that operates as a DVD player and VCR. You also get the remote control and the cables necessary to hook it up to your TV. You need two AAA batteries to operate the remote. The batteries are included but you will eventually need to purchase replacements. You also get a user's manual that 71 pages with lots of detailed instructions on all the features. I have found the manual to be very helpful.

The DVD player holds only one disc. According to the manual, you can also play audio CDs but we haven't tried that. We already have a stereo that has good sound.

According to the manual, this unit has the following playback formats: DVD Video, DVD-R, video CD, audio CD, CD-R/RW, MP3, WMA, and JPEG. We simply put in either a video or DVD and it plays. I am not sure about the other formats.

You can record TV shows on the VCR. The DVD does not record.

The unit itself is a good size and fits easily into our entertainment unit. The measurements are:
width: 17 inches;
height: 4 inches; and
depth: 10 inches.

The unit is silver and the clock glows orange. It has a neutral look that fits well with our decor.

OUR EXPERIENCE

The first thing I noticed when setting up this combo unit was that it had three separate plugs to stick in the tv. The problem is that our tv is eight years old and it only had one hole that matched the plugs from the combo unit. I turned on the combo unit and tried the various plugs. As it turned out, it worked with only one plug inserted. The other two just dangle free.

Another problem was that the plug from the combo unit didn't fit securely in the hole in the tv. I am not sure if the tv or the combo unit is to blame. In any case, a small bit of duct tape solved the problem. Fortunately, the problem is on the back of the TV so I don't have to worry about the kids touching the loose plug.

Other than that problem, the unit was relatively easy to install. I ran the cable through the unit and that went fine. It still works well 5 months later.

The remote control works well from any place in the room. However, my biggest gripe about this unit is that you need the remote to operate a lot of the DVD features. Without the remote, you can not accesss the special features on the DVD or play the games. I have three kids and our remotes get lost on a regular basis. It is such a bummer to have to go searching for it each time I want to use a feature on a DVD disc.

The door to the VCR slot and the DVD drawer seemed flimsy to me when we first got the unit. However, after five months of heavy usage, primarily by my 9 and 5 year old children, this unit has held up fine.

The picture on the TV looks fine to me although I am not really that fussy in these matters. We don't have HDTV. In fact, our TV is eight years old.

This combo unit has lots of other features. You can set the clock, set up timed recordings, get still pictures and slow motion, set a parental level and other things. We haven't gotten into these advanced features.

One nice feature of this unit is that you can copy DVDs onto Videos. We only have a VCR for our other TV and it would be nice to copy our DVDs onto Videos so we can watch them elsewhere. However, I haven't found the time to try this out yet.

FINAL RECOMMENDATION

This combo unit has a very reasonable cost and delivers with good performance. My kids have given it some rough handling and it has stood up well. I would definitely recommend it.
