Unreliable DVD Playback
Pros
small footprint for 2 functions - decent remote - VCR is good
Cons
reader freezes - movies on DVD are no fun to watch
Recommended it?
No
This is the second Toshiba unit I've had, and it's a replacement for one that I returned under warranty because the DVD's motor would get so loud sometimes that it could be heard easily over the sound of the movie that was being played.
This one works fine as a VCR. During DVD playback, however, it works fine for maybe an hour, then begins to hesitate, and finally freezes up and displays a still picture. You can get it to play for a few seconds by hitting rewind, then play; but once it starts freezing, you might as well turn it off for a couple hours before trying it again. This happens even with brand-new, retail DVDs, although it is worse with rentals.
Haven't had this trouble with the DVD reader on my computer system.
