I just throw out my second Toshiba DVD/VCR combo. First one was a SD-V291, it lasted for 13 months then DVD picture start freezing. Second one was a SD-V392 and it start freezing in only 9 months, the warranty on this one was for 3 months.
First the problem start after using for about 1 hour or so then slowly start freezing sooner, finally it doesn't play the movie at all.
This time I bought a Sony DVD/VCR combo, There are only two reviews, both are one or two star with similar complains, not enough review to judge from.
I do like to add that $30 Yamakawa DVD player in kids room running for last two years with no problem.
If Sony breaks, My next buy will be separate DVD and VCR from cheap manufacturers.
