Hats off to Toshiba SD-1200

Pros Price and Features
Cons None
Recommended it? Yes
The Toshiba SD-1200 DVD player is an excellent entry level player. I recently purchased it and will never go back to VHS. It is far superior to the VHS format and with the greater availability of DVD movies it?s a must for the got have it crowd. The Toshiba SD-1200 DVD player plays CD and VCD (karaoke) formats.

The Toshiba SD-1200 has numerous features that match or beat the more pricier models. They are all accessible via a handy remote control with easy to use on screen menus. They are as follows:

Language Settings
You can select from English, French and Spanish. This function changes on screen language, menu sound track and subtitles. The subtitle is a neat feature if you are studying a foreign language.

Picture
This feature changes the viewing area from normal, letterbox to widescreen formats. On most DVD discs the picture format is set for a normal picture on one side and the other side is the letterbox format. The picture function allows you adjust the black level from enhanced to standard black levels, for crisper viewing.

Audio
This function allows you to vary the audio output of DVD, CD, and VCD formats. Dynamic range control function is only available on DVD discs recorded in Dolby Digital and be adjusted from full dynamic range is maintained or reduced.
Karaoke Vocals can be with or without primary vocals.
. The setting depends on what sound system you connect the player to. These features give the in home theater sound. The settings are:
Bitstream is used when connecting to an amplifier with Dolby, DTS. MPEG1 and MEG2 decoder.
Analog 2ch is used when connected to a TV, Dolby Pro Logic, or a stereo system through analog audio jacks.
PCM is used to connect to a 2 channel digital stereo amplifier.

Display
This function allows you to turn off the screen saver, the on screen displays and to change the background color.

Operation
The Toshiba SD-1200 has a Parental Lock function that allows you to control the viewable content from NC-17 to G. This is accomplished by entering a 4 digit lock code than select the rating that you want your child to be able to view. Not all discs have the ability but may allow you to replace scenes unsuitable for children with more suitable scenes or lock out the movie entirely.

The other function allows you to improve the pause/still resolution. Remote confirmation with an audible beep when you select an operation via the remote. Title stop allows you to have the movie stop or continue after the title is complete.

Advanced Playback Features
Zooming a picture can be done in normal, slow motion or still playback, the quality is nothing to write home about but is neat feature to play around with. The camera angle is another fun feature to play with, it allows you to change the angle of a scene provided that the movie was filmed with this feature in mind. The Matrix is such a movie and is a must see to get the full use of this feature.

3-D (N-2-2) sound enhancement is a way to enjoy surround sound with only two speakers using a proprietary sound processor built into the DVD player. This feature depends on the recording process and may not work or cause systems such as Dolby Pro Logic Surround not to function or behave differently.

All in all the Toshiba SD-1200 is an outstanding performer that is loaded with features at a reasonable price. I Highly Recommend the Toshiba SD-1200.
