Toshiba SD1200 DVD Player
Pros
Good video and sound quality, price, easy to use
Cons
Remote buttons too small, have to point it directly, no optical digital audio out
Recommended it?
Yes
The Bottom Line:
The SD1200 deserves attention if you want a good DVD player from a manufacturer known for producing excellent DVD players.
DVD players are getting cheaper every day. This new model at $200 rivals more expensive competitors with its combination of features and video quality.
Toshiba is known for their outstanding DVD players and this new model continues this tradition. This is a solid DVD player with sturdy rear-panel inputs and outputs. The SD-1200 has a single coaxial digital output and a pair of standard RCA analog-audio outputs (it lacks optical digital-audio output).
The back panel has composite and S-video outputs and ColorStream component jacks. The best way to connect DVD player to TV is use component-video outputs but even S-video output looks great on this player.
All Toshiba DVD players have a video black-level enhancement mode that you can access from the menu (it does not provide much improvement in visual picture quality).
SD-1200 has Dolby Digital and Digital Theater Sound (DTS) outputs.
Front-panel design has only buttons for basic functions. Everything else is performed through the remote control. So if it is lost or gets broken, only the basic functions will be available.
The buttons on remote are too tiny for large fingers. Also you have to point the remote directly to the player for it to work. The button layout is good - Left/Right and Up/Down buttons are centrally placed, with the Enter button in the middle.
The unit allows you to dim or deactivate the front panel display. It also has onscreen bit-rate meter, it fluctuates from less than 1 to 10, and although it's useless, it's nice to look at it once in a while.
The SD1200 deserves attention if you want a good DVD player from a manufacturer known for producing excellent DVD players. Also, check out my reviews of other DVD players (Panasonic RV-20, RV-30, Pioneer 333, etc.)
