The Bottom Line:
If you are looking for a moderately priced DVD player and don't need progressive scan get the Toshiba SD1700. I highly recommend it!
A year and a half ago I paid 250.00 for a near top of the line Sony. My wife and I got quite a bit of use out of it, but it was always touchy - if there was any dust or imperfection on the DVD then the machine would just flash "C 1300" at us (No disc present). Lately it has become real sensitive, refusing to even play a brand new DVD. After reading the reviews here on epinion.com we decided to get a Toshiba SD1700. We went to Best Buy, Circuit City, and finally Sears trying to find one. After setting it up I pulled out my test CD - a scratched "Dogma" DVD that the Sony refused to play. The Toshiba played the entire DVD without incident, which is very impressive given the amount and depth of scratches on this DVD. We also found the zoom feature neat, although we like to watch the wide screen version of DVD's.
