Could This Be the Ideal "Starter" DVD Player?

bySloucho Jul 2, 2001

Pros Excellent machine with a manual written by someone familiar with the English language.
Cons I had to replace the remote because I like to watch movies in the dark.
Recommended it? Yes

Ordinarily, Mrs. Sloucho and I do an awful lot of research before buying appliances/electronic equipment. We don't like stuff that breaks; we don't like to overpay; and we don't want to miss out on really cool features that we could have had for just a few dollars more. But as likely as we are to... Pros Low price, good quality audio and video, apparently more reliable than other low-priced...
Cons No optical digital output, no MP3 playback, limited CD-R support
Recommended it? Yes

If you are finally thinking about making the jump into the world of DVD, you may have been tempted by the cheapest DVD players. Brands like Orbitron and Apex make DVD players that often sell for less that $100. Wow, what a deal, right? Well, that depends. Do you want a reliable player that will... Read full review »

Pros Low price.
Cons No CD-R, CD-RW playback.
Recommended it? Yes

Toshiba's new SD1700 DVD players offers users solid quality and NTSC-standard (non-progressive-scan) performance for a street price of $180. If you want a machine for audio playback of CD-R's and CD-RW's, you'll need to look elsewhere. This player only handles the standard DVD-Video, CD, and... Read full review »

Pros Solid performance and good feature set
Cons Price, looks, no CD-R, CD-RW or MP3 playback
Recommended it? Yes

The Toshiba SD1700 DVD player is a successor to a well-known SD1600. For less than $180 it features ?Parallel Video Output? and DVD-R playback.

Looks

I don?t understand what is wrong with Toshiba, but they continue to produce DVD players that look plain and cheap. If you don?t... Read full review »

Recommended it? Yes

If you're looking for an Intro level DVD player, or perhaps even a DVD Player for your secondary TV, the Toshiba SD1700 would be a wise choice. I've had this DVD Player for over a year now, and have it's given me nothing but enjoyment. I'll describe my "out of the box experience".

The Toshiba SD1700 DVD player has all the standard features in its DVD players, such as parallel video output, Dolby Digital and DTS compatible output, Spatializer N-2-2 virtual surround sound, and an icon-based onscreen display. However, this unit is basically the same as the SD1600 its suppose to... Read full review »

Tiny but high quality player.

Pros Excellent picture quality. Good feature set for a basic player.
Cons Lacks progressive scan output. Only coaxial digital out instead of both.
Recommended it? Yes

The SD-1700 is definitely the underdog of the DVD player arena. Make no mistake, it is a quality player, but this is the player you by for your Mom to watch DVD's with.

I actually received the 1700 as a prize for a contest I was in and at the time I didn't have a stand alone player since... Read full review »

Pros Plays just about any DVD whether scratched or not.
Cons None
Recommended it? Yes

A year and a half ago I paid 250.00 for a near top of the line Sony. My wife and I got quite a bit of use out of it, but it was always touchy - if there was any dust or imperfection on the DVD then the machine would just flash "C 1300" at us (No disc present). Lately it has become real sensitive,... Read full review »

Pros Good picture and sound quality
Cons Quit working after playing just two DVD's...
Recommended it? No

I had good experience with Toshiba products in the past. However, after playing only two DVDs my SD1700 quit working.
I put it in the shop over three months ago and it is still not fixed. The repair shop said the problem is the power supply and also said that Toshiba has had trouble procuring... Read full review »
