Froze, will not play or eject DVD - even after disconnecting power cord
Pros
When powered off all lights are off; I like a completely dark room.
Cons
DVD player can freeze, can't get DVD out. High pitched whinning during some operations.
Recommended it?
No
The Bottom Line:
Do not buy it. The freeze/lock up problem is just too severe. If it was not for this issue. I would not have any real problems with it so far.
I got Toshiba model 4990 DVD player yesterday (31 Mar 2006). I have a couple of problems with this model:
1. It makes a high pitched whinning sound during some operations. I have never heard a similar sound from any DVD player before.
2. DVD player can get stuck/frozen. Can't even eject the DVD and must disconnect the power and wait 30 minutes to resolve. Here is my story of the freeze/lockup:
I was playing a DVD and I hit next to go to the next chapter. It froze and no combination of buttons would unfreeze it.
It basically seemed like it died. I was playing all titles/chapters and I hit next chapter after title 12 or title 13 and it froze. Yes, title not chapter. This DVD seems to have been arranged funny in that each title has 2 chapters. Chapter 1 had real content and Chapter 2 seemed to be empty; maybe it was a pause or something. It will not play anything any more and I can not open the DVD player to remove the DVD. I have tried:
1. power on/off. No help.
2. To open and close the DVD player both after powering on and off and immediately. It will not open. The wierd thing is that I can hit open, it will not open. Then I can hit close and it will say loading...
3. Disconnecting the power. The goal was to make sure that the software initialized from a fresh state. No luck. I also tried 1 and 2 after disconnecting the power.
It also froze with a different DVD; however, disconnecting the power solved the problem. No luck with this DVD.
I know that parts of the DVD player are operable. I can some times get menu to come up and change settings and so forth.
Well it turns out that after leaving the power disconnect for about 30 minutes (not sure of the exact amount of time) at least get the DVD player back to normal operation and I was able to open/close the tray. I tried reproducing what I was doing previous to cause the lock up/freeze, but was not successfull. In any case, this has happened twice with two different DVDs. I have only tried two DVDs.
I think that it will need to go back to the store. I develop software and I can only assume that it was put into a state that it was not able to recover from. There are a couple of things that I think that are needed:
1. manual way to override to get the DVD out.
2. reset so that it starts from. I.e. I do not want to wait 30 mintues or however long. I was to be able hit a reset button now and proceed.
