Toshiba SD9200 DVD Video/Audio Player - Its Time Has Passed

Pros Features, bragging rights
Cons Price, picture quality, better performance from some sub-$300 models
Recommended it? No
The Bottom Line:  As of now, the SD9200 is overpriced and cannot match the level of picture quality provided by today';s best DVD players, even ...
The Toshiba SD9200 costs a fortune and is supposed to be a great performer. Unfortunately, it is not. The player has progressive scan and DVD-Audio playback. And it is progressive scan where it is far behind today?s cheap models like Panasonic RP56 and JVC 60, 65, 70 and 75.

The SD9200 uses Genesis chipset (gmVLX1A/gmAFMC). There are several problems with its picture quality. In progressive scan mode, the deinterlacing performance is quite poor as the video mode detection is far from optimal. There is a lot of combing visible. Fortunately you can manually switch it to video mode.

The player?s MPEG decoder also suffers from the chroma upsampling errors, especially visible on material with saturated red colors. There is some ringing visible, which is worse when the Edge Enhancement is on. And some Warner Brothers movies experience artifacts with blacker-than-black feature turned on.

The player plays CD-R discs as well as DVD-Audio. On the positive side, the SD9200 produces excellent sound quality and features great DVD-Audio playback.

The player features a built-in Dolby Digital decoder with 5.1 analog outs as well as optical and digital audio outs. In addition to S-Video and composite video outs, the player has component video outs that can be switched to progressive scan mode (480p).

The video circuitry can be switched off while listening to music to avoid cross-talk noise and interference. the player also plays HDCD with full 20-bit resolution and so-called precision filtering improves the playback of regular CDs.

Remote

The remote control has backlight and features a joystick control.

I don?t want to describe the features of this player, since I wouldn?t recommend it anyway. It is not a terrible performer, but for this price, you can get 3 progressive scan DVD players with better video performance and DVD-Audio. Probably it was a good player for its time when it was released, but its time is gone.

If you are looking for the good progressive scan DVD player, the excellent Panasonic RP56 with sophisticated Sage/Faroudja FLI2200 chip for $229 may be all you need. And For $279 you can get JVC S70 or S75 with good progressive scan performance and DVD-Audio playback. Both JVC and Panasonic play CD-R and CD-RW and mp3.

Verdict

As of now, the SD9200 is overpriced and cannot match the level of picture quality provided by today?s best DVD players, even the ones in sub-$300 range.
