The Toshiba SD-P2600 Portable DVD Player is Sleek!
Pros
A versatile player with a great picture.
Cons
The sound of the built-in speakers need a little richer sound.
Recommended it?
Yes
The Bottom Line:
This is a higher priced portable DVD player, but it out performs the lower priced players.
The Toshiba SD-P2600 portable DVD player plays almost all DVD and CD formats in a widescreen portable player. The player provides a parental-lock so you can set it up to protect what your children are watching. It can be connected to a TV for bigger viewing and digital Dolby or DTS sound. Not only can you watch movies with it, you can listen to MP3 music and view your digital photos. This player folds into a small, sleek, attractive, easy to carry portable player. Price around $399.
The Screen
The SD-P2600 has an 8.9-inch poly silicon widescreen LCD display, with a high-resolution of 1,024-pixels x 600-pixels image. You can select to view 4:3 Regular TV Screen or 16:9 Letterbox widescreen. The screen is a TFT (Thin Film Transistor) active-matrix display to give it a great a colorful picture.
It has progressive scanning for twice the scan lines of a conventional DVD player. Progressive scanning gives it sharper images with a better resolution. It has an LCD driver with a built-in MPEG decoder for best picture quality.
Bottom line; the screen is much bigger than other portable DVD players selling for under $200, with a richer looking picture in a true widescreen.
DVDs & CDs
The SD-P2600 is considered a portable DVD player, but it plays so much more. It plays DVD movies/video and DVD-R. DVD+R is not shown and I have none to test with since I burn only DVD-R discs. (DVD-R work great) It also plays many CD formats, audio CD, CD-R, CD-ROM and CD-RW. It will play your MP3 files and digital pictures on CDs in the JPEG format.
Photo Playback
The SD-P2600 has a front slot for SD memory cards and Multimedia cards. If you are lucky and your digital camera has one of these cards then you can view your digital photos instantly. You can record your JPEG files on a CD-R, CD-RW and CD-ROM using the ISO 9660 format.
The JPEG photos can be displayed on a photo album with up to 8 thumbnail images at a time or view them in full screen. In the full screen mode you can zoom in and move to an area of the photo and rotate the images 90 degrees. You can run your photos as a slide show and repeat them after the last photo has been shown.
What You Get
The Toshiba SD-P2600 portable DVD player
A wireless remote control
A battery pack
AC power adapter and car connector adapter
A user's manual
Power Sources
The SD-P2600 can be powered with the included AC adapter, the included car adapter and the provided battery.
The battery is a rechargeable lithium ion battery that attaches to the bottom of the player. It is a 7.4 volt battery that charges up in about 3 hours and has about 3.5 hours playback time. The charging times and playback times are pretty close with the specifications from the manufacture. The LCD can be turned off to save power if you are connected to an external TV for viewing.
Overall
For a portable DVD on the go, this slim little beauty is great!
The only downfall with this unit for me was the sound from the built-in speakers; not enough bass control, too much treble sound. It does sound better than the lower priced players. Now connecting an external set of computer speakers with a subwoofer improved the sound quality. For the road trips I find that headphones are the best alternative to sound because it doesn't distract the driver; you can plug-in two headphones at a time.
The most impressive feature for me was the picture quality, which is rich in color and clarity. Watching Walt Disney's Dinosaur and Monsters Inc. gives you a great look at the rich beautiful color of the screen. I love the widescreen format since my DVD collections are in the widescreen; this gives the view of the original movie version. I find that I can take this player to my family or friends, work or leave it at home and use it to show off my digital photos that I have saved on a CD. The player makes a great digital album.
The remote is rather small, but easy to use and operate. On a trip the remote is not even needed since the unit is usually in a lap and the controls are all built on the player in easy reach when the display is up.
I do like the Toshiba SD-P2600 portable DVD player because of the ease of using it and the quality of the picture. You pay for what you get; a $200 DVD player is no match for this little beauty.
