The Bottom Line:
The P2500 is a versatile and inexpensive portable DVD player with good performance and features. It costs less than a laptop...
The Toshiba SD-P2500 portable DVD player features a 9" widescreen LCD screen, progressive scan and even DVD-Audio playback. It weighs 3 lbs with the battery pack. The player can also be powered using the supplied AC adaptor instead.
The controls on the player itself (at left of the DVD disc compartment) are quite comprehensive, featuring, among other things, the menu control buttons. The screen is flanked by two speakers providing you with stereo sound.
The player comes with cables that let you connect it to an external TV, including component video cables (the player has a proprietary 14-pin jack for this). It also comes with a compact remote control. Some functionality is only available through the remote, whereas some only from the player's controls (e.g. the ability to switch between the LCD screen and the external monitor/TV).
Performance
The device's LCD screen is tuned for video and surpasses the laptops in the smoothness of the motion of the objects onscreen. The image looks sharp and vivid with well-defined edges. However, the LCD screens are inherently unsuitable for reproducing deep black color and the P2500 has some issues in this regard.
Because of this, some details can be lost in the dark scenes. When the player is hooked up to the TV (especially a progressive scan TV), the image quality is excellent with good detail level and well-defined object edges.
The sound is stereo even with DVD-Audio discs – the player downmixes the 5.1 soundtracks to stereo and you can use its virtual surround sound modes. The built-in speakers can produce adequate sound volume and you can connect headphones to the player if you want to.
The player can also be used as a JPEG image viewer – from a CD, SD Card or a SM card. The images load somewhat slow from the disc and player can't handle pictures with high resolution (above 1.5 megapixels).
Battery
The included battery lasts for about 3-3.5 hours and you should be careful when the battery is close to being depleted – the player nay freeze and require the disconnection and reconnect of the battery to come back alive.
Features
The player has zoom as well as the ability to adjust the contrast, brightness, tint and color. You can turn the edge enhancement on and off (I has never been a fan of the edge enhancement feature). The player has both coaxial and optical digital audio outs as well as an analog stereo audio out. You can even grab a frame while watching and use it as the "wallpaper' for the player's standby mode.
Bottom Line
The P2500 is a versatile and inexpensive portable DVD player with good performance and features. It costs less than a laptop computer and is devoid of jerky motion you may experience watching movies on one.
