The Bottom Line:
The finest portable DVD player at the time of this review (12-29-03).
This product has by far, the best screen display as of this writing (12-29-03). Highest pixel count coupled with progressive scan...it cannot be beat. I've looked at all of the products from all the competition, and believe me, this unit has the best screen display by far.
That being said, LCD screens (including this one), have a real difficulty in displaying true black color. So....dim or darkly lit pictures will have a loss of detail compared to CRT displays or the very best Plasma displays.
However, this unit from Toshiba, blows away the competition in portable DVD players as of this date.
A minor but justifiable complaint is that the battery will become drained if left connected to the player EVEN WHEN IT IS TURNED OFF. So, make sure that the fully charged battery is removed from the player, unless you need to use it on the battery. When using the AC adaptor, remove the fully charged battery, and store it in a safe place until needed.
Plenty in inputs and outputs both visually and audio....the headphone connections (2) can be configured for surround sound via the setup menus included with this device.
Plenty of setup and adjustable picture menus are available.
For an overall rating on a scale from 1 to 10, I'd give this portable a solid 10 based on the competition as of this date.
Expensive...? Yes, but definitely worth every penny.
I compared portable DVD players for about a half a year, and then decided to go for the Toshiba SD-P2500, and I'm glad I did...no regrets at all...highly recommended.
