Very good laptop for the price
Pros
does everything its supposed to. good design.
Cons
battery life not too great, graphics performance okay.
Recommended it?
Yes
The Bottom Line:
The laptop does what its supposed to do (other than the battery life). For the price a really good deal. Pen functionality is useful in many situations.
This laptop is part of a category of laptops called "oversized tablets" - that is they're probably a bit too big to carry around like the notepad a tablet is supposed to replace. The advantage of these is that for a very cheap price you get a full fledged laptop with the cool pen functionality.
This laptop does everything its meant to do. If you're looking for a laptop with pen functionality but dont want to pay the price for an ultra portable or you just dont like tiny laptops (I dont), then this is probably the best deal around.
It has a good 14 inch widescreen with a really good display. (That said, it uses Intel's GMA950 graphics chipset, so dont expect to be able to do anything too graphics intensive like games or CAD applications).
It has pretty big keys (almost the size of a desktop keyboard), making it easy on the hands. It has a slightly wierd key layout (Home, Page Up, Page Down, End are in a vertical line on the right), but you get used to that pretty quickly.
Flip the screen around and this becomes a Tablet PC. The pen functionality works great. The screen has a hard textured cover on it which means that it is great to write on and it does spoil easily. I've used this for a year without any screen protector and there are no scratches or anything. There are no parts of the screen where the pen doesnt work.
The hand writing recognition in Vista is amazing. This thing seriously can read my handwriting better than I can.
With a Dual Core processor, 1 GB of RAM and a 100GB hard disk, this laptop has plenty of power and space toserv as a desktop replacement if you dont do anything too processor or graphics intensive. I've tried running Microsoft Visual Studio 2005 and that runs fine. I've tried running Microsoft Flight Simulator X and that pretty much didnt work at all.
In addition this laptop has a few extra bells and whistles. A DVD writer, a not very useful but cool fingerprint sensor, S-video out, SD card reader, etc. The ingerprint sensor on average takes two to three tries to read you fingerprint (even more if your hands are slightly sweaty), which means that typing in a password is actually easier. Also, there were reports that these Utek fingerprint sensors are less secure than a simple windows password (because of the way they store the fingerprints). Haven't read up too much that, but clearly this is meant to be more of a cool gadget than an actual security feature.
The only real downside to this laptop is its battery life. I only get about 2.5 hours running on Vista's power saver mode. I would have expected slightly more, but its not that bad.
Overall, highly recommended.
