Cons
a little pricey!
Recommended it?
Yes
The Bottom Line:
The rechargeable battery, extensive options, and incredible features make this remote a MUST BUY ...plus it completes a sleek, modern looking room
I use my Harmony to control a TV, DVD player, my LIGHTS!! (via x-10), my stereo, and my cable box!!--I'm sure there will be more to come!!
I just purchased my harmony 880 about 2 weeks ago and have had no problems with it yet! (crosses fingers!)...It is my first universal remote and I am in love! My parents have a huge clunky remote at their house which cost them considerably more than the harmony cost me, plus they needed a technician to program it all!
With the harmony remote, all you do is plug it into a computer via the included USB cable, log on to Logitech's website, and that's it! The rest is so easy. The program prompts you to enter a device...so I pick TV's...then you select brand (they have almost EVERY brand)..scroll down to say..Sony...and then the model number...it then programs your universal remote with the codes for the TV...after you inform the remote of all your devices, you can have it create "macros" (or a program) for you, that will do many steps with just a push of a button..for example, I click "watch a dvd" and the remote automatically turns on my stereo/dvd for sound/picture..turns on my TV, and turns it to the right channel--and I even told it to start playing the movie! it's incredible!
I did a LOT of research before choosing the 880 and it is definitely the best on the market right now in my opinion. Yes, 249 is a lot to pay for a remote..but think about the joy of throwing out those 5 extra remotes. Plus, this remote can be updated every 2 weeks or so with your tv guide, so you can see it on the lcd screen on the actual remote!
The buttons are really easy to press, and the channel and volume buttons can be set to always stay on certain devices...so my volume buttons are ALWAYS set to control the volume on my sound system, no matter what device I'm controlling. A few of the hard buttons (i.e. not the ones on the LCD) include 0-9, stop, play, record, rew, fwd, pause, menu, exit, guide, info, mute, channel up/down, and volume up/down.
If you still have the remote for one of your devices, and you can't find it on Logitech's website or through their really responsive tech support, you can teach your remote directly the commands, and it is really easy to do this too! The computer will walk you step by step through everything!
There is also a very helpful on-screen help that is installed on the remote..so if you're trying to turn on you're tv and it wont work, just push the "help" button and it will troubleshoot for you. It has worked for me every time!
