A Very Good Basic VCR

Pros Solid construction despite feeling light. Good ergonomics and easy set up.
Cons Picture quality a tad poorer than on my GE VCR at EP.
Recommended it? Yes
The Bottom Line:  This is a solid choice for everyday use. A good reliable cheap VCR without cheap plastic parts.
We bought this VCR for my mom since she watches the odd movies and for the relatives to watch movies and home videos. I have used the machine to dub camcorder footage.

The VCR looks light and feels light but when you peek inside you see a solidly designed tape transport with metal (yes metal components). I had a HiFi GE VCR from 1997 which still runs to this day and delivers sharp images despite heavy use. GE seemed a good choice compared to the plastic Emerson or Durabrand Funai made VCRs. This machine appears no different in build and quality but lacks stereo.

Sometimes GE misses the boat on quality - they had problems with TV set tuners in the 90's but Thompson has improved much of their quality control.

GE VCRs have always been solid but no frills yet they offer good value for the money. I bought my old one because Consumer Reports rated it a best buy.

The old GE VCR has slightly better picture quality at EP but no playback problems exist between the two VCRs. I don't know why this is the case but the difference is minor.

GE includes a manual that is easy to understand and this machine is dead easy to use.
