Pioneer's Secret Give-away

Pros Loaded: Surround-sound-palooza (DTS and Dolby everything), individual speaker equalization, component AV switching
Cons Medium-current amp; complicated for the novice (but great for the hobbyist); no storefront availability
Recommended it? Yes
The Bottom Line:  Great budget buy. Excellent combination of technology standards and power in an AV switching receiver. The audio achieves 192 kHz@24 bit; the video is HDTV-quality component analog.
This AV switching receiver performs well, and has all the technology one could hope for in an under-$1000 unit. (I paid $350 plus shipping). The funny thing about it, though - Pioneer doesn't seem to acknowledge it's existence. Oh sure, if you call their tech support, they'll certainly help - they even sent me a manual to examine the specifications before I bought the unit - but you won't see it on their website.

I spent a good deal of time fleshing out what I wanted in a surround-sound AV receiver, and this unit had it:

DTS 5.1, Dolby Digital 5.1, Dolby Digital EX, DTS-ES Discrete 6.1, DTS 96/24, DTS-Neo6
THX Select Certified
MCACC (Advanced Multi-Channel Acoustic Calibration System)
Virtual Surround Back
Mid Night Listening
96 kHz / 24-Bit Analog / Digital Converter
192kHz/ 24-Bit Digital / Analog Converter
Component Video Switching
Conversion of S-Video/Composite to Component
7.1 surround OR 5.1 2nd room stereo
110W per channel, 7 channels

The neat thing about this unit is that it will automatically balance the speakers using the included microphone - INCLUDING GRAPHIC EQUALIZATION! That's right, not only does it balance volume levels, it also balanced each speaker individually for "spectral response," or frequency response, just like you might do yourself in the "old days" by using a graphic equalizer. Of course, you can always override the automatic settings and tweak each speaker yourself for frequency and volume. This is how I saved a bunch of cash on speakers - I "garage saled" until I found enough quality speakers to get 7.1 sound, and let the receiver equalize them to sound good.

It's got gobs of AV inputs and outputs, more than I need, even with my equipment list including DVD VHS Cassette tape turntable computer. I'm not even using the Cable/Satellite input. It has 3 digital sound inputs, one digital out, and also a pre-amp out (if you wish to attach monster amps).

The remote is commensurately complex, but it works just fine to achieve my objectives.

One thing to be aware of: While this unit does have decent power, they (like most of the under $1000 units) stretch the truth a bit about power. "MOSFET" technology aside, this is not a true high-current unit. It fills my 17 ft. x 23 ft. living room with ear-wax-melting sound, but if you want to crumble your inner ear bones, you'd best pony up $2500 or more for a high-end unit.
