Cool look, but prepare for errors

Pros Great "vinyl" look, complete with grooves.
Cons Out of 50 discs, perhaps 30% will be useless.
Recommended it? Yes
The Bottom Line:  Great retro look. Recommended with the understanding that you may only be getting about 35-40 discs, as 10-15 may be unrecordable.
I burn a lot of CD-Rs, and I loved the look of the Verbatim Digital Vinyl (Multicolor) discs. When they work properly, they're great. Be forewarned, however, that in a pack of 50 discs, I had about 15 that could not be recorded upon. That's an error rate of 30%.

I made my purchase at Amazon for $27, with free shipping through the site's Amazon Prime program.

When I opened the pack, I was surprised to see that not only do the discs have the basic look of a miniature 45, but the finish even has an effect that looks like the grooves you'd see on vinyl.

In this pack, the labels on the discs came in several colors -- blue, green, gold, purple, and pink. There were about 10 discs of each color. I could've done without the pink or the green, but obviously this will be a matter of personal preference.

I burn my discs at very slow speeds. My Optowrite DD0401 is four years old, and though it ostensibly burns CDs at 40x, I tend to use speeds like 8x or 4x. I'm not in a great hurry when I'm doing this, and I'd rather be deliberate and more sure of getting the result I want than to try to burn at the highest speeds and succeed only 50% of the time.

I primarily use Power2Go CD burning software.

It must be said that most of the discs in my Verbatim Digital Vinyl CD-R pack burned perfectly. The audio sounded fine on another computer and on my stereo.

But essentially, I paid $27 for 35 discs, not 50.

My general experience with Verbatim discs has been very positive. A 50-pack spindle of Verbatim DataLife Plus Thermal Printable CD-Rs has been flawless. That product would be my top recommendation for anyone who burns a lot of CDs and doesn't care about a retro appearance.

I make most of my CDs for other people, and it's nice to add a certain dimension to the gesture. Some of my music files were recorded from LPs, and most of my CD collection is jazz from the '50s and '60s, so the look of the Verbatim Digital Vinyl CD-Rs is particularly appropriate. For these reasons, I will probably buy them again, but will look for them at a lower price.

Verbatim also sells packs of Digital Vinyl discs that come in just one label color, white.
