Disappointing toy telescope

My stepson received a Vivitar 50x/100x Refractor Telescope for Christmas. He excitedly took it out to our balcony, from where he got a nice view of the nearby mountain and the local neighborhood. When he tried to use it to look at a crescent moon at night, however, he got disappointing results. It was very difficult to locate the moon through the main eyepiece (even when we had the moon in clear sight through the "finder scope"). The moon's image appeared reversed left-to-right, which made it difficult and frustrating to move the telescope to the correct orientation. With an unsteady tripod base and an imprecise bearing adjustment lever, the telescope gave us no reliable way to steady the image in the eyepiece. When we finally got the crescent moon into focus, it appeared as four overlapping images!
