Practical 32" LCD HDTV with some potential huge flaws
Pros
Good image quality for price. Excellent EPG implementation
Cons
Potential for incomplete channels when tuning HDTV over cable. Image lacking when used with computer
Recommended it?
Yes
The Bottom Line:
Good HDTV LCD for the price. Huge flaw if using built-in HDTV Tuner with Cable (QAM)
FIRST IMPRESSIONS:
I saw this unit in Costco and was immediately draw by the low price: nearly 1/2 the cost of a name brand unit with what appeared to be similar features. I brought the unit home and was impressed with the ease of the manual. The unit was attractive, despite being slightly large for a 32" unit.
IMAGE QUALITY:
The image quality was not bad for the price but could not compare with similar TV from sony or sharp. One noticeable feature missing was automatic backlight adjustment based on ambient surroundings. Lacking this feature makes the image slightly bright during night and too dark during day without daily adjustments.
During dark scenes, one of the biggest flaw of LCD TVs manifests: dark objects with grey shades are difficult to discern. This is an area where the higher end brands seem to have done their homework.
When connected to a PC via the RGB Analog input, the image was not very sharp. This is because the TV attempts to scale the image to it's native resolution of 1366x768. No matter what I settings I tried to match the native resolution, the unit refused to display the image scaler-free. No 1-1 or dot-dot image on this unit which would have allowed for razor sharp PC images.
FUNCTIONALITY:
The HDTV/SDTV Channel information and description information from EPG (electronic program guide) was flawlessly implemented. This is the first LCD TV I've seen that has done this perfectly. This TV displays both current TV Title and description and future shows correctly.
The remote functionality lacks some features present in other TV's. One is that channels cannot be manually added - only an automatic scan is allowed to sense which channels are visible. This may cause problems for some HDTV channels that are not broadcasted during all times of the day.
The one flaw that I could not accept was when using HDTV tuner over cable (QAM), two channels could not be tuned. ABC and PBS were not listed when auto channel tuning searched. This is huge for me, and this issued was confirmed by a couple others on avsforum.
SOUND:
Decent sound though a tinge on the tin can side.
