Excellent, Affordable Bipole Surrounds
Pros
Very good quality - affordable - underpriced for what they are.
Cons
None
Recommended it?
Yes
The Bottom Line:
Affordable, excellent build and audio quality. An easy recommendation for low-mid level systems.
Bipole surround speakers are sort of like two speakers in one. Triangular, both sides facing outward have their own speaker, resulting in a wider dispersion of sound, better imaging and immersion. Almost always, these speakers cost a pretty penny.
Wharfedale, the British company known for making affordable, high quality speakers has done it again with these.
The first thing one notices when they're out of the box is the build quality. Made out of wood, these are sturdy, fairly hefty speakers that inspire confidence.
Features (taken from Amazon.com listing)
2-way rear ported floorstanding unit with real wood veneer
6.75 inch homo-polymer bass / midrange drive unit
1 inch silk fabric dome tweeter
125 watt power rating (RMS)
Frequency Response 39Hz - 20kHz
Audio quality is nothing short of delightful. The surrounds offer a dynamic, clean sound that really brings one further into the movie. They really put out quite a lot of sound - I have a 6.1 system with these as the side surrounds. The way the room is set-up, I started playing titles less and less in 6.1 and more in 5.1, as these surrounds put out an enveloping enough sound to almost feel 360 degree.
The fact that these are priced under $100 makes them a steal of a deal. While they likely won't compare to $500+ bipoles (I rated these a 4 for sound - they sound execellent, but I wouldn't go as far as to call them "professional" quality), those who have low-mid level systems may appreciate these as an inexpensive way to have quality bipole rear speakers as part of their system.
The speakers are hooked up with binding posts, located in the back. The speaker grills/covers can be removed. A nice-sized keyhole in the back makes these easy to hang.
