A radar detector that does the job
Pros
It works well.
Cons
A few false alarms, but I can live with it.
Recommended it?
Yes
The Bottom Line:
Buy it because it works well without the unneeded bells and whistles. Don't get brainwashed by marketing and think that your radar detector needs a voice.
I'm very pleased with Whistler 1650. It does the job well without the unneeded bells and whistles. I've read several epinions on radar detectors and how Valentine One is the best radar detector. My take on this is:
1) If you speed often enough to justify spending $300 on a radar detector, you're a lunatic. Consider moving to Germany and drive on the autobahn instead.
2) If you have a Valentine One and still bought ANOTHER radar detector to compare it against, you need to get a life and get out of your car more often.
Getting back to radar detector:
Most of the features of the more expensive radar detectors are really not needed. For example:
1) 360 degree laser eye protection. Completely useless because laser guns need to be aimed from a stationary position, and they cannot be aimed from the side. What this boils down to is that you don't even need rear protection because if someone is using a laser gun on you, and you're moving, the guy has to be in front at some point, and you will be passing him. 1650 has a rear laser protection in any case.
2) digital compass. IF you want a compass, buy a compass, not a radar detector!
3) voice alerts. Keep saying "Ka" to yourself and see how long it takes before you get annoyed.
4) DSP chip to reduce false alarms. It's a costly luxury because even though the device might suppress false alarms, who's to say that it won't suppress legitimate warnings? The reason why you would buy a radar detector is so that you can be paranoid when it comes to cops tracking your speed, so you might as well be comforted that your radar detector detects garage openers in addition to police radars.
