Yamaha's Flagship

Pros Clean Sound, Plenty of power, Has everything!
Cons Very complicated, not cheap
Recommended it? Yes
I originally had the Yamaha RXV2090 combined with their DDP-1 for Dolby Digital or AC-3. This was an excellent unit already but silly me I have to upgrade when I get bored. I ended up getting the DSP-A1. The DSP-A1 was made for the future it has every possible in/out possible. It even offers the optical cable connection for all your components! This sure makes connections easier.

This unit offers DSP modes even while in Dolby Digital or DTS mode. My old 2090 couldn't do that. Yamaha suppose to have the best DSP. The echo from this unit is more subtle than my old one. DSP brings spaciousness to the rooms. Some people like it but most don't. I have to admit that I do.

I wish Yamaha never changed their remote control. Their old one was flawless. This new design is terrible! I had mine for almost 2 years now and I still don't know all the buttons yet.

The receiver itself is very complicated. I still don't know how to fully use it's potential. I think you can set the EQ internally and set specific sound delays, but I never got into it. Yamaha try to make a clean design by eliminating buttons on the receiver itself. You have to dial a knob instead of pushing a button. I personally like buttons better.

This unit comes in two colors: Solid Black and for those who like wood, They offer a Gold version with Rosewood sides. The latter cost a bit more. Price varies depending on the merchant.

This unit does offer everything. It has auto detect for Dolby Digital and DTS which makes it easier to use. One thing I should mention is that this unit does not include a am/fm tuner. Yamaha felt that it may bleed into the sound, which is true. On my last unit if I set it to let's say CD mode and turn the volume to full blast I can hear the radio in the background. So Yamaha did away with it totally. You can however add it back in by buying a tuner on the side.

Overall a great machine for $2K but it's not worth a penny more. Consider the Denon also when making your decision. They use a another chip set so the sound is slightly different.
