The Bottom Line:
"Bang for the buck", the only receiver I liked better was the Denon AVR-5800, but $4000 wasn't worth a divorce.
I researched my purchase for about 18 months. I looked at all the product offerings from the mainstream manufacturer's(Pioneer,Sony,Yamaha). Yamaha 5280 won on THD and power. It wasn't until I brought it home and hooked it up that I really came to appreciate exactly how awesome this unit is. I purchased it at the same time I purchase my Toshiba 57H81 widescreen hd tv. The receiver has all the right i/o for anyone's home theater needs. Bonus is the 6 channel inputs for DVDAudio which, even with limited selection right now is the warmest, most realistic audio I have ever listened to (Metallica,Foreigner,Alice Cooper,Eagles and Deep Purple). Remote is a little difficult but I upgraded to the SIMO SUR-20 touchpad ($99 at best buy) and turned 6 remotes into 1 (big hit with the wife, even though she hasn't figured it out yet). I upgraded to the Yamaha from the Pioneer VSX-455 and even though power rating and THD are comparable the sound from the Yamaha is noticeably more powerful???. No remorse here!
