Yamaha's HTR-5790 is Audio/Video Perfection
Pros
Flawless sound reproduction, superior i/o flexibility, power to run three zones, automated setup.
Cons
The remote is complicated. Otherwise, home theater receivers don't get any better than this.
Recommended it?
Yes
The Bottom Line:
The Yamaha HTR-5790 home theater receiver is an amazing investment and flexible enough to drive multiple devices and zones with perhaps the best sound you've ever experienced.
Audio/Video Perfection
I've had my Yamaha HTR-5790 7.1 home theater receiver for over a year now. It is flawless and there is literally nothing bad I can say about it. I like it so much I purchased a smaller sister-model for my NYC apartment.
I owned a Yamaha receiver prior to this one that lasted for 12 years and have long been impressed by Yamahas dedication to quality construction and sound reproduction.
Flawless Sound Reproduction
First and foremost, the HTR-5790 is magical in its ability to recreate the musicality of both musical performances and the presence of film soundtracks.
I'm not going to bore you with specifications that can be researched but the main feature of sound created by this receiver is how clean the reproduction is.
Never a hint of distortion regardless of volume level or tone adjustments made. No hum, no buzz, just pure clean music and voice with ample power to drive pretty much any speaker you throw at it. My front speakers are power-hungry KEF Reference models that have never sounded better (I used to drive them with a dedicated Adcom monster that I found I no longer needed because the Yamaha sounds so sweet.)
The many digital signal processing sound stages available via the remote or adjusting the simple dial on the face of the receiver presents an embarrassment of riches. And yet again, regardless of the sound field selected, reproduction is faithful and clean. I've literally spent thousands of dollars more on electronics to end up with inferior sound. I just don't think anything sounds better at any price than the better home theater receivers Yamaha is turning out these days.
Reproduction is natural and warm without artificial coloring on the bass notes or the highs. A Direct Stereo option offers full tone bypass for pretty much the cleanest uncolored stereo reproduction available for money.
Amazing Tuner
If, like me, you enjoy the radio, you'll really love this receiver. It accepts dozens of preset stations and, once programmed, they "autotune" flawlessly with almost no drift (and I'm not using an external antenna.)
Input/Output Flexibility
One of the mains attractions of the HTR-5790 for me are the many input/output options. I won't list all the inputs and outputs but I was sold when I saw 5 (FIVE!) component video inputs and 3 (THREE!) digital optical inputs. As someone with multiple dvds, lds, and who knows what the future will bring, this is the kind of flexibility and future growth I wanted to see built in.
There is even a thoughtful front-mount input for quick connection of auxiliary items such as an ipod, computer or camcorder.
Multi-zone Speaker Smorgasbord
The HTR-5790 is so flexible it offers a veritable speaker smorgasbord across your choice of 3 zones. I use mine to run a home theater and to run in-ceiling speakers in my living and dining rooms for parties. You can hook up any combination of up to 7.1 speakers in the home theater room and still run 2 other zones!
The soundfields available on this receiver include many that use Yamaha's extra 'presence' speakers, an extra front set of speakers in addition to the front and center channels on most systems. I really recommend using these in your home theater system. The realism they add is palpable.
Speaker terminals are large, strong and easily accept thick monster cable or banana plugs. The HTR-5790 comes with a thoughtful tool for tightening and releasing the speaker terminals that makes the job a bit easier to reach and reduces effort needed to tighten, untighten connections with so many wires and cables in the way if everything is already connected.
Easy Installation
Installation is extremely simple considering the complexity and flexibility offered by this amazing receiver.
The instruction book is well written and is must reading if you wish to take full advantage of all the features. It should be kept handy for reference. But let's face it, this thing probably does more than most cars.
The YPAO automated setup facility for the home theater is probably the best thing to ever happen to home theater, in my humble opinion. Instead of manually attempting to set up and balance all 5, 6 or 7.1 of your home theater speakers (the system is flexible enough to pretty much handle any configuration you throw at it), you just hook up the special microphone and run an automated setup facility.
Speakers connected, their size, dynamic range, bass abilities and distances from each other are tested automatically via various sounds and automated calibrations.
The results are amazing. I have NEVER been able to get home theater sound this awesome with manual adjustments and consider this feature worth the price of admission. The system automatically compensates/adjusts for the speakers you have or don't have installed. No thought involved on your part whatsoever. Could it be any easier?
Simple, Solid Construction
For a powerful high quality electronic device that is capable of so much, the Yamaha HTR-5790 is surprisingly simple and elegant in design.
Controls are solid in feel and satisfying to the touch. Knobs feel substantial, turn easily yet are sensitive for precise control.
Heavy, solid, dependable. This is a high quality receiver that will not disappoint in any way.
Very Highly Recommended
I highly recommend the Yamaha HTR-5790. I got mine at Best Buy on sale for around $600. I would go so far as to say it is foolish to spend more money. Having owned Carver, Adcom, KEF, Denon, Bose and many other high-end "audiophile" names, I can honestly say I don't think it is necessary to spend any more than this. This receiver delivers perhaps the best sound you will ever hear in a pleasing and thoughtfully designed unit.
