Nice receiver for the money

Pros Very nice unit for the money. Yamaha quality.
Cons Remote can be confusing at first use.
Recommended it? Yes
The Bottom Line:  This unit would fit entry to average level users just fine.
I just finished my basement and was in the market for another sound system. I have always been partial to Yamaha receivers, dating back to my first real receiver out of college -- an old Yamaha 50 watt/channel pro-logic unit up through my current Yamaha 795a unit upstairs in my main system. My goal was to build a reasonable system around my old trusty Mirage bookshelf M490's (that I still love )that had been in a box for a couple of years when I upgraded to a pair of Paradigm Monitor 9v2's -- mostly for cosmetic reasons for the new house, although the Paradigms are a nice upgrade. My budget was not that high since I over-spent on the basement itself, but I decided an entry level Yamaha/Denon/Onkyo-ish unit was better than a Sony/Pioneer/JVC-ish mid level unit. I ignored my gut to get another Yamaha, and bought my first Dennon -- the Denon AVR-686. After about 10 minutes of listening to it, I started to regret the purchase. It seemed underpowered, and did not seem to push the speakers to fill the space sufficiently. Five minutes later, the unit died. I took that as a sign from somewhere that I should have bought the Yamaha. I returned the Denon the next day, and quickly replaced it with the Yamaha. For less money, I got more power (15 wpc rms more) and more features that fit my needs. The 5850 pushes my mirages very nicely and I am very happy with the purchase. The power seems more than adequate, and I do tend to listen to music somewhat loud at times. My speakers have an efficiency rating of only 86 dB, so I really think this power is more than enough for most applications. The three optical / 1 coaxial digital inputs, one digital output, and the multi-channel stereo feature all nice to have, not to mention the fact that it is ready to receive 6 channel signals for SACD and DVD Audio.
