The Bottom Line:
The RX-V1300 delivers music at a level that will impress anyone. The home theater sound will have you hiding under the furniture during war/horror movies!
I listen to music as much as TV so I wanted high current amps with enough power to shake the house. The RX-V1300 coupled to my Definitive Technology BP2002TLs delivers this with power to spare. A and B speaker selection allows you to put sound in other rooms with equal results. Another requirement was HDTV video switching and plenty of inputs and outputs to handle future needs. Yamaha, as well as others, make lower powered units that will provide all of this so if you are looking for home theater only save a few bucks and get one of the lower priced models, but if you want loud & solid music spend the money for the 100x6 watt power.
You will need a good knowledge of audio-video components to correctly install and operate this receiver, or a friend or salesman that can help. And expect to spend a couple hundred for some high quality cables to get maximum performance.
The remote is easy to program and will operate just about any infrared controlled device. It is a little confusing at first but with a little practice becomes very easy to use (I had the wife running this rig in two lessons!). People over 40 should have reading glasses handy as the buttons are small and difficult to see.
I spent a few more dollars and purchased my RX-V1300 from an authorized Yamaha dealer in order to have a factory warranty, even-though I do not believe I will ever need it with this well-built product.(Yamaha as well as most companies will not honor warranty on products purchased on-line or from non authorized dealers, check their web-sites to be sure). If you use a good surge protector and need to save money get one on-line and scrap the warranty, it's a good receiver and will last for decades.
The surround, Dolby digital and effect fields on this receiver are beyond description and until you hook one up to a full compliment of speakers you have not heard theater quality sound the way the movie company intended. The RX-V1300 should include seat-belts for your recliner!
If you want top of the line performance start with the RX-V1300 and two high end main speakers with powered sub-woofers. Wire the subs to the low frequency out and run the mids and tweeters on the L/R main channels. This is a great start and even-though it is only stereo you will not believe the sound quality, then as you can afford it add a center channel speaker and finally the rears.
To promote a good relationship with your neighbors you will have to invite them over on movie night but be warned, they will not go home easily!!
I love my RX-V1300 and it has delivered more than I expected. I would recommend it to those who are looking to be the envy of their friends.
