The Bottom Line:
An excellent choice for a home theater system. Perfect for someone who wants to experience movie theater sound at a reasonable price.
Overview
Actually I have a RX-V496, which, as another reviewer mentioned, is the same as the RX-V495 but with 70 watts per channel instead of 60. It sounds great, is easy to use, and is unobtrusive.
Background
I got one of these at The Good Guys when I bought my home theater system. It's hooked up to four Boston Acoustics CR7 bookshelf speakers, a Boston Acoustics VR910 center channel speaker, and a Klipsch KSW-12 subwoofer. I have it connected to my Toshiba SD-1200 DVD player's digital audio output and use it to listen to CDs and DVDs.
Sound
The sound is just amazing. Music sounds flawless and movies sound better than at many theaters. The receiver also provides plenty of power; at about half volume the windows in my living room start rattling. When I first brought this thing home and connected it to my DVD player and speakers, I put on The Matrix and was blown away. Dolby Digital and DTS sound on this system is simply amazing.
Inputs/Outputs
The receiver is the glue that holds your home theater system together. You need to be able to connect it to the other components in your system. This receiver has connections for two sets of main speakers, a center channel speaker, a pair of rear speakers, and a separate subwoofer output. It also supports both optical and coax digital input, has audio in/out and video and S-video in/out for a VCR, and audio, video, and S-video input for a DVD player. This receiver also has audio in/out for a tape or MD recorder and audio and video connections for your TV. There are other inputs and outputs as well, but I don't use them.
Configuration
You can adjust the volume of the different speakers and the subwoofer to even out the sound. You can also specify whether you have a subwoofer, whether you have a center channel speaker, and whether your rear speakers can output low frequencies well. In other words, you should be able to configure this receiver to work well with almost any home theater speaker setup.
DSP
This receiver has a DSP that can simulate a number of different effects, such as Concert Hall, or a 70 mm movie theater. I don't use them much since I think it's a little distracting, but the effects do sound fairly realistic. It also does Dolby Pro Logic, Dolby Digital, and DTS decoding. The Dolby Digital and DTS decoding sound absolutely fantastic.
Remote Control
One of my favorite things about this receiver is the remote. It's programmable and can control my TV, VCR, and my DVD player, as well as my receiver. I also like its shape and the way the controls are laid out.
Construction
This receiver looks solidly built, and has an impressive size and weight. I like the exterior appearance as well. The amber LCD display is simple and undistracting.
Conclusion
This is a great receiver for a typical home theater system. More expensive receivers will give you more power and more inputs and outputs, but this one should be more than adequate for most people's needs.
