Purchased this receiver about 2 months ago at Good Guys for $300. I had previously used JVC and Sony receivers but was a bit dissapointed with the harshness of the Sony receiver. I looked at receivers from JVC, Kenwood and Onkyo (for Dolby Digital) but settled on the Yamaha RX-V495 and have been very pleased since.
I consider Sony/JVC to be on the lower end of the scale with Yamaha/Onkyo mid-range so the key was to get the Yamaha at a decent price. I believe this line has been recently discontinued so you should be able to find it a discount; it's also often packaged in a home theatre system under a different model number so be aware...
I've played a variety of CD's and DVD's on this receiver, ranging from Rock n Roll, Jazz, Classical, Dance and a variety of movies. (I'm using this receiver with Aura speakers, Cerwin-Vega center and Infinity surrounds, a motley group of speakers...) All of them sounded great, clear and full of warmth. While the 60w/channel rating may seem a bit skimpy, don't be fooled. Turning it up halfway will rattle the walls and probably get me kicked out of my apartment! Yes, there are more powerful receivers for the price but they just won't sound as good. The receiver is well-laid out with a simple interface as is the remote. The DSP soundfields are a lot of fun, you can set it for Rock, Disco, Concert Hall, Sports, etc... and they are quite effective.
And finally, the construction! I nearly gave myself a hernia pulling the box out of my car. If weight means anything, this receiver would fall into the solidly built category, hands down... All in all, a great receiver for the price, if you can find it at a discount, give it a listen. You'll probably end up buying it!
