Great sound, great features

Pros Excellent sound quality
Cons Cumbersome remote
Recommended it? Yes
I bought this receiver four years ago. I don't remember the exact reasons for buying this particular unit, except that I did listen to all the units I looked at on the same set of speakers in the store very carefully. (I spent about four hours in the store listening carefully to various units between other customers.) I have been very happy with my choice.

The receiver has excellent sound in all of its settings. None of the settings distort the sound so much that one can hear the distortion over the surround effects. This is not true of all units. Also, it has excellent sound for watching movies. Since it's only Dolby Pro-Logic and not Dolby Digital, there are better sounding units available for watching movies now, but this one still sounds better than any theater I've ever been in.

I find the controls to be easy to use, although the remote is quite cumbersome. It's nice that it's a 'learning' remote. One can point other remotes at it, and it will memorize their codes, so you don't have to worry about whether a particular model device is in the code book that most programmable remotes use. However, the number of buttons (there are THREE sets of play, stop, rewind/back, etc. buttons on this thing) is incredible, and can be confusing even with the color-coded sections.

I really doubt that one could ever find this product new these days, but this would be an excellent choice in used equipment, and I would have trouble buying anything but a Yamaha again after owning this.
