Yamaha...Need I Say More!!!!
Pros
5 disc DVD player, Yamaha quality receiver, all in one box
Cons
subwoofer power and size, junky cables in the box
Recommended it?
Yes
The Bottom Line:
Buy it and build around it. The benefit to a component system if that all components can be upgraded to weed out the weak links.
I bought this HTIB (Home Theater in a Box) because I needed a new receiver and wanted to upgrade my 3 disc DVD player to a 5 disc. The main selling point of this HTIB was the Yamaha name. I have worked in retail electronics for many years....you just have to love Yamaha. They are the only electronics company by the way that makes instruments.
I like the look of this unit as a whole. The lines are clean and the display is crisp. I was, at first, intimidated by the number of buttons on the remotes (especially the receiver remote), but after a couple good reviews of the manual....I had it all figured out.
The receiver in the unit is the HTR-5450. A wonderful unit to have. The s-video switching makes connecting the DVD player, SVHS, and Satellite a snap. I also love the front s-video input and front optical input (a must for those gamers).
The DVD player is the DV-C6280. A 5 disc DVD, CD, VCD changer. This DVD player has play exchange which allows you to change 4 discs while playing one....great for parties. This unit also has a disc tray that comes completely out allowing you to put all 5 discs in without rotating the tray. This makes for fast exchanging of the discs.
The speakers are excellent as a beginner setup. I would replace the front left and right speakers, because I don't feel they have the punch that I am looking for. The center channel leaves dialog a little flat since it is only a 2-way speaker. A 3 way would be a big step in the right direction. The subwoofer......where do I begin.....at low volume to medium volume the sub is great, but once the music of movie gets really cranking the sub boggs out. Again a great starter sub, but one that will be replaced soon. An alternative to replacing the sub is to add an additional sub this would negate the need for more bass at higher volumes.....more subs equals more bass.
Lastly, I think the system is great. I got a great deal on it since the model was about to be replaced with a new HTIB from Yamaha. Would I pay $999? Probably not. The most I would pay as an outside consumer would be about $700. Like I said I work in the industry....and I got a great deal. Don't expect to run out and find a deal like the one I got (see "amount paid").
