I purchased my Yamaha YSTM8s because I was looking for a second set of speakers for my surround-sound system for my computer. I am currently using them as such. I have a different brand of speakers (and subwoofer) for my primary speakers.
These speakers are amplified for 10 watts of power (5 watts each). Don't let the power statement though fool you, these speakers can pump out a LOT of sound, with extremely little distortion. The speakers have a power on/off button, a volume control, and a bass/treble control on the right speaker. It comes with a seperate headphone jack, and a jack to connect to a subwoofer. You can also input one other device into the speakers.
I've played Environmental Audio games (4 channel surround sound) and they help bring those games to life. I've played audio CD's and they help bring the sound out in great quality, again with little to no distortion at the higher volume levels. My system event sounds seem to come alive as well.
Yamaha is one audio company that has been around for years, and is very well respected for putting out excellent, high-quality products. I'd have to say these speakers are no exception!
