Excellent in Every Aspect

Pros Excellent sound. Attention to details. Nice usability touch that counts.
Cons I don't like saying none, but haven't found one yet.
Recommended it? Yes
The Bottom Line:  Excellent sound, and the attention to usability and design is absolutely outstanding.
Yamaha makes a variety of products, including some well regarded music instruments. As such, you would expect Yamaha PC speakers to be much better than average. This set of speakers does not disappoint.

I was in search of a set of inexpensive, but nice 3-piece speakers. Initially, I bought PCWorks, but had some problems with it (It?s a long story, which I put in my review on PCWorks.). After that, I decided to try the Yamaha MS35D.

I will list the advantages and disadvantages of this set of speakers here:

Advantages

- Great Sound. This is sort of the whole point of any speakers. The particular thing I like about the sound is its high fidelity. Some speakers are tuned to produce so much bass boom it becomes annoying. As with most 3-piece speakers, you can tune the bass volume of the subwoofer. In addition, I noticed that the bass sound, even when cranked up high, is very ?self-contained.? It?s a little hard to describe, but unlike many speakers that seem to have the bass sound spread over and echo for too long, the subwoofer produces clear, contained low-frequency sound that has the boom, but doesn?t ?spread over.? The sound is very clear throughout the range, but I emphasized the bass because this sets it apart from other speaker.

- Volume Control Location. The volume control and the ON/OFF switch is located on one of the satellite speakers, which makes it very convenient to turn the speakers on and off as well as changing the volume. Many speakers have the control and switch on the subwoofer, which is inconvenient. Yamaha has put a very nice touch on usability with this design.

- USB Input. Yamaha MS35D is capable of receiving audio input directly from the USB port. You would have to install the USB sound driver on your computer, but this means you do not even need a sound card. For those who might be interested, Windows 2000 comes with the driver that works pretty well.

- Two Analog Audio Inputs. Weird, isn?t it? This is actually a pretty neat feature. Yamaha MS35D can receive signals from two analog audio inputs at the same time. This means you can hook up your PC and your discman/walkman to the speakers at the same time. I personally haven?t needed to utilize this feature, but tried it for fun, and it worked extremely well.

- Shielded Cables. This cords/cables used to connect speakers and input source are shielded to avoid interference. This is more important than it sounds, which was one of the gripes I had with PCWorks. Yamaha apparently didn?t cut corners and used the more expensive shielded cables, which was important to me to avoid picking up unwanted radio signals.

- Space Saving AC Adaptor. Personally, I am sick of AC adaptor that takes up two or three sockets on my Power Bar. Yamaha, once again, with its nice usability touch, puts the AC adaptor away from the plug, so it doesn?t take up more than one socket, which it uses. This is the kind of touch I feel is lacking in many products in general today. I hope Yamaha continues to pay attention to details like this.

Disadvantages

- Very Sensitive. This is kind of good and bad. The speakers are extremely sensitive to input signals, which means if you have a very nice sound card (or clean audio source), you would love the sound. However, if you have a, say, $10, sound card, you might notice a little bit of noise that the sound card sends out inadvertently. I really wouldn?t worry about this though, since you really have to be super, extremely paranoid and careful in a particular environment to notice that.

- Really, not much else.

I really have no regrets whatsoever about my purchase of this set of speakers. They cost slightly more than some other 3-piece speaker systems, but the small amount of extra is worth every penny. In fact, the sound along is worth the price, and all the additional nice features are just bonus.

Recommended wholeheartedly.
