Although the name Yashica is not well known, it is certainly a respected company in the photography industry. The Yashica T4 Super is definitely one great innovation in the Point and Shoot field. The design philosophy is simple: all you need is a great lens! If you are new to the world of photography, I hope you take away only one thing from this review, and that is: all you need is a great lens! By definition, zoom lenses cannot be great lenses because they simply have too many glasses in between the image you want to take and the film that?s recording it. Just imagine, your film is your eye and your camera is the window to which the world is separated from. A zoom lense means you have at least 6-7 windows in front while a non-zoom has only 4. The Yashica T4 Super uses a Carl Zeiss Tessar 35mm F3.5, which is a great lens. The 35mm field is slightly wider than your eye, and is a very usable range. The F3.5 means you don?t need as much light to compose an image, which helps a lot when taking pictures in darker environments.
Now onto other useful features. The top focusing window allow you to compose a picture at 90 degrees to the image you are taking. For instance, if you don?t want people to know that you are taking a picture of them, you can just point the camera their way, and look down onto the top of the camera, and take the picture. This feature alone should be reason enough to buy the camera for some people. I personally tried to use this feature to take street photos and it works out great. People won?t know that you got their picture until its too late.
I have nothing but praise for this camera. If you are serious about getting some pictures that you can enlarge later, this is it.
