Run Your Way to Success
You can swear off carbs, or add in metabolism-boosting supplements imported from the jungles of South America, or eat only grapefruit and carrots for a week, but if you don't exercise, your weight loss plan will suffer. Even in a best-case scenario, you'll lose weight but won't look toned. Running or jogging is the cheapest, and most convenient method of exercise- you don't have to join a gym or pay membership fees, you can step right out your front door instead of driving to a class, you can do it with friends, and you can burn more calories in a shorter time than other forms of exercise. Running tones your whole body, even your biceps, triceps, and back muscles, and vastly improves your cardiovascular health. The pounding of your legs on pavement also encourages strong bone growth, which is important especially for women and teenagers.
Running is intimidating for so many people. It might bring back memories of gym class horrors, or fears of looking silly or hurting your legs. But as long as you're fully prepared for the challenge, running can be relaxing, easy, and fun.
Dressed to impress
Some shorts also come with built-in liners. Nike makes some great comfortable, loose shorts that are very airy and good for keeping cool. The trendiest running gear right now comes out of Lululemon- their clothes are incredibly comfortable, but for the amount they cost, they'd better carress you nicely. As a company, Lululemon is trying to sell the entire relaxed, fit, yoga mindset along with their clothes, and their in-person stores provide a fantastic shopping experience.
Nike Free Run
These Nike Free Run+ women's sneakers are great for someone who's used to jogging or walking already. They are part of Nike's "Free" collection, which means they try to simulate the experience of running barefoot as much as possible, while still providing you with arch support. This means that the sneakers are absent the large rubber layers most sneakers have on the bottom, and the sole of the shoe is more flexible, so you can bend the toe up and down in your hand. The rubber bottom of the shoe is broken up into a grid up small rubber squares to enable this bendability.
When I bought these shoes, the salesperson told me to practice walking in them for a few days before trying to run in them, so that the muscles in my foot could strengthen and adapt. Ultimately, the shoes are supposed to strengthen your foot and calf muscles more than other sneakers do, so you may expect a bit of soreness at first in muscles you didn't know you had. However, I've loved these sneakers, and they seem great for anyone who has suffered from shin splints or who hopes to build up their feet and lower legs.
These shoes also have the capability for Nike's Nike+ program. The sole has room for a little sensor, which can connect to your iPod to track your runs.
Adidas Sneakers
Adidas sneakers are terrific. They're cheaper and more lightweight than some other brands, and have options for pronators, under-pronators (these refer to where you land on your foot when you run), those with shin splints, and those with no problems whatsoever. They come in wide varieties of colors, don't need to be broken in at all before you take off, and their netted fabric is great for cooling off sweaty feet.
Music makes everything better
Ipods, obviously, are great music listening devices. I would actually recommend one of the older iPod models rather than an iPod touch for running, though, since with the iPod touch it's easy to accidentally skip songs as you hold it in your hand. At the same time, since the iPod touch screen locks if you don't use it for a bit, it can also be difficult to skip songs when you do want to. However, iPod touches are better for watching videos, which you might want for those rainy days when you hit up the treadmill.
In my opinion, it's important to buy a music listening device that allows you to make playlists. There are songs I love to sing along to while I drive, but those same songs would only drag me down during a run. Pay attention to that as you pick one out, and then spend some time designing your running playlist. The songs that come on make a HUGE difference in your energy level as you run, and boring or slow songs can drag you down without you even noticing.
MP3 Running Accessories
If you're worried about carrying your iPod in your hand while you run, you have a lot of choices as to armbands and wristbands for keeping it secure. Make sure your armband won't cut into your arm as you run, but also that it won't fall off- you move your arms more than you think during running. Furthermore, don't be worried if you feel a little soreness in the arm holding the iPod after the run!
Recovery
If you do have a strain, don't be afraid to skip a couple days of exercise. Right after the injury, ice the muscle for 20 minutes, let it rest for 20 minutes, then repeat. After a day or so of icing, it's all right to move on to heat.
Other muscle exercises, such as pushups and situps, will also aid you in your running. You can also try moving stretches, such as high-knees, butt-kicks, and skipping to warm up your muscles, stretch out, and start burning calories even before your run.
