Amazing for something under $100 *updated 12/29*
Pros
Plays MP3, WMA and ASF encoded CD-R/RW, and of course conventional cds.
Cons
Short Anti-skip for conventional Audio CDs (only 40 sec), bulky design, and weak battery cover.
Recommended it?
Yes
The Bottom Line:
One of the best portable cd/mp3/wma player for under 100, long anti-skip protection times for encoded cds, especially WMA
Personal Experience
This CD player is very well done, IRiver has done a very good job building this CD player. The features are quite extended, similar to their Slim-X series, but way more affordable. Now that I've used it for a more extended amount of time, I have more opinions to add. The CD played is thick and heavy, but tough. I've dropped it several times from various heights (not purposely), and not a scratch on it. The player reads many types of CDs, including Audio CDs, MP3 and WMA Encoded CDs. I was not amazed with the conventional audio cd anti-skip however. The player started skipping badly during one of my jogs, probably due to its tiny 40-sec memory, therefore forcing me to use encoded cds. MP3 and WMA encoded CDs are is very very good, because i don't have to lug around a packet of cds around with me, just burn ~120 songs in MP3 (128kbps) format and go. So far, i havent had any problems burning cds, as long as i keep within the standards. However, I am not as fond as their MP3 codec as their WMA. MP3 encoded songs only offer 120 sec, which is still quite alot, but not enough when I walk long distances with the CD player in my pocket. WMA encoding suits my active lifestyle much more, since it offers 240 sec antiskip at 64kbps (WMA CD quality). And another thing, the remote is easy to use, once i got the hang of it, and lets me control all the functions available on the cd player itself. The battery life is decent, about 10-12 hours, but it doesn't fill up to its 16 hour, as stated on the iriver.com site. When I first changed the batteries, i noticed the weak battery cover and fell off many times when its not locked. All in all, I had and still have a great experience with this CD player, and totally recommend this to whoever likes LOTS of music on the go.
*Important* (in my opinion) Feature Highlights
In-Line Remote
Anti-skip features
Large LCD (4 Line)
Many audio codecs (WMA,MP3,ASF)
Firmware upgradable
Anti-skip Features
Audio CD - 40 Seconds
MP3 Encoded - 120 seconds
WMA Encoded - 240 Seconds
