VBR MP3 is not supported

Pros Very flexible settings, big LCD
Cons dont like VBR MP3
Recommended it? No
The Bottom Line:  You can buy it only if you plan to never play VBR MP3 files and are not afraid of tonns of menus.
I am mostly using MP3 players in the car to listen audiobooks while driving to work or home. I used to have Sony MP3 CD player which worked just perfect. Then I decided to give this one to my wife and buy something else for myself. After a lot of searching, reading reviews and even buying some cheap models I finally decided to buy iMP-150 as the most advanced and high quality one for the good price (I found it for $60 with a car kit). Really it has all kinds of settings that only can compare with good software mp3 player program on a PC. No other CD player can boast even a bit of its features: browsing a disk like with file commander, user-defined equalizers, oscillograms, keypad emulator, even a game. I updated its firmware (yes it allows you to update its microcode from iRiver website) to version 1.30. Everything looked great.
But then it all started. My audiobooks are usually encoded in VBR mode. Sony player worked with them good. But iRiver... I start playing new MP3 VBR file. Then I stop it somewhere in the middle. Next time I resume it, it starts playing about 5 minutes ahead of the point I stopped it. If I stopped it close enough to the end of file it skips to another file. If I try to rewind to the place I stopped it, it jumps it over. Say, I stopped playing of 82% of the file. When I resume it, it shows like 95%, when I push rewind it jumps 56%, 92%, 54%, 89%, and so on, jumping on the file like a mad rabbit. IT TAKES ME ABOUT 5-10 MINUTES to put it close enough to the place I stopped it! It happens everytime with VBR. I tried to contact iRiver, all they said is "dont use VBR". But I would have to re-encode a lot of files this way. How come Sony players deals great with VBR and this "professional" model with all kind of features cannot do it? I would exchange 3/4 of its features on ability to play VBR correctly. Now I think how to sell it. Very sad experience.
